"MojoNine is essentially a one-man rock and roll band."
"...um, usually..."

This from Darrell Maki, the main guy behind the band, which began as a side project for this long-time native of the Boston music scene. MojoNine is, quite simply, honest rock music with zero pretense.

Currently , Darrell is recording and gigging with two Boston bands, Specimen 37 and The Gloria Forward, and at the same time he continues this favorite "semi-solo-side-project," MojoNine. He explains the beginnings of MojoNine this way:

"I have always been a songwriter as well as a drummer, but it was really during the last five years or so that I've really started to sit down and record material completely solo. Most of this material was originally intended to be Demo stuff to play for the guys in my other bands. I didn't really plan to play all the parts myself, it was just easier and faster to records the songs that way."

"I had a catalog of over 30 songs which I'd written, and I really wanted to start getting them on tape. If I had waited for all the players and studio time to be available, it would've taken forever. So, I built my own studio and just played everything myself. After a while, some of my friends from other bands would ask to hear I was working on. Sometimes they'd like what they heard enough to start jamming along, so I recorded them too. It kind of became a big social 'hang-out' thing and it's really a lot of fun to do."

The main musical influences for MojoNine vary widely, from the catchy pop rock of Foo Fighters and the Marvelous 3 to the honesty and introspection of Jeff Buckley and Tori Amos. Darrell himself is a Berklee college graduate, and explains his take on songwriting as such:

"Essentially, the simple and catchy songs are usually the hardest to write. I grew up on Zeppelin, Kiss, and old Aerosmith, and their collective sense of strong songwriting and musical 'teamwork' really made an impact on me as a musician."

At the moment, Darrell still considers MojoNine as "primarily a recording band for now," however he looks forward to assembling a live lineup as well. "The first goal was simply to get most of these tunes on tape. I'm still only about halfway through my current song list, but I'm getting there."

MojoNine continues to write, perform, and record in the Boston area both solo and with his bands, Specimen 37 and The Gloria Forward.
