Details:
Morning Spy is a San Francisco-based indie pop band whose textured guitars and fuzzy, yet intricate songwriting evoke the sounds of Luna, Modest Mouse, Yo La Tengo, and Destroyer. The band started as a recording project in drummer Mark Loftin's apartment over the summer of 2001. Mark and bassist/songwriter Jon Rooney spent months working out songs based on the tenets of the Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth and "Street Legal"-era Bob Dylan. Soon singer/guitarist Allison Goffman came on board and those rough early recordings led to several local shows. Guitarist James Spadaro joined the band over the summer of 2003 and, with the line up complete, Morning Spy set out to record a proper album.

"Subsequent Light," released in January 2004, was engineered by Bart Thurber (the Decibels) and Aaron Estes (Nik Freitas) and mastered by Myles Boisen (Rova Sax Quartet) over the span of three seperate sessions in Oakland and Visalia, California.

*Devil In The Woods (#5.4) - "...Morning Spy is full of dreamy pop for rainy days. ...the winning number is "Slow Flood," which features bassist Jon Rooney singing in a Dean Wareham/Stephin Merritt sort of way. His deep vocals over the jangly pop are charming, and the guitar breaks, bass lines and (Allison) Goffman's backing vocals are perfect"

*West Coast Performer - "Morning Spy is that San Francisco indie-rock band that reminds you of a band but you can't think which one. Listeners can tell that this mini-masterpiece was well-produced and recorded professionally. ...From the start of "Slow Flood," the opening bass line pulls you in, draws you in, making you wonder what those distant vocals are saying."

*Left Off The Dial - "...comparisons to bands such as Yo La Tengo and Galaxie 500 are unavoidable, but they can be dispelled; this is clearly a band that doesn't have a problem being compared to legendary groups as long as the listener can make the distinction that this is still truly original music. The universal themes that Morning Spy incorporates here will make this album a staple in your post-relationship breakup music for years to come."

*Splendid - "Morning Spy's pretty dream pop with classical indie pop underpinnings will float through your head like gossamer... You'll wake up from Morning Spy with a big smile and a pleasant feeling that'll last for hours afterwards"

*Indieville - "... it is clear that the band have a lot to offer to the scene."
