Details:
When vocalist Remington Cox suffered a microphone malfunction and broke off a chunk of his front tooth on stage, he had a choice: stop singing and seek emergency dental care or spit it out and finish the song.
Remy finished the song. Bonding would have to wait.
From that performance at Oceansideâs Pier View Pub in October 2006, the original trio of musicians continues to evolve, adding a new band name and a lead guitarist. But Play The Fox remains committed to its alt-rock heritage, incorporating influences such as Muse, the Blues and Mars Volta. The boys have performed at The Key Club in Hollywood, plus SOMA (main stage) and the House of Blues, both in San Diego. On September 5th 2008, SOMA hosted the release of Play The Fox's first CD, entitled "Born Today."
Legend has it that the original band name, Shenanigans, is Gaelic for Play The Fox, so the boys just switched dialects. But change is good. The addition of lead guitarist Evan Gillig has added a harder edge, especially on the second CD's title track, "Born Today." At the same time, another departure from Shenanigans is a softer sound from Cox's keyboards, most notable on "Hiding in the Orchestra" and "Leonardo Sleeps Alone." The new sound is completed by the impeccable rhythm of Cory Williams on the Drums and the intricate yet classy bass lines of Philip Noel. Mix it all together and what do you get? A delicious musical cake. Try a slice, you'll love it.
Cox and Williams co-wrote âOh! The Romance,â one of seven songs on Shenanigans' CD, "Stella Luna." The band chose this track for a music video, which earned a spot in L.A. radio station 98.7's Rock Star Contest earlier this year. The boys beat out more than 100 bands and played the Key Club as part of the Top 5 acts in the contest.
Filmmakers and brothers Jason and Greg Skiano and Nick Conedera directed the music video, which was shot last summer in San Diego. The video was featured on San Diegoâs Channel 8 News.
On Play The Fox's initial CD, "Born Today," the collaboration continued. Cox, Williams, Gillig and bassist Philip Noel worked up all five songs. The fourth track, "Voices," was the choice for the latest music video. Once again, the Skiano brothers handled the production.
In addition to anchoring the band's rhythm section, bassist Noel also provides the primary mode of transportationâa 1988 Volkswagen Vanagon. In February of 2008, it carried the boys from San Diego to San Francisco for a Northern California tour.
