Northern Kentucky songwriter finds his voice in latest effort
I'm sitting in my bedroom looking at a copy of Donnie Witt's "Delicate Ordinary Need". As I flip through the booklet reading the poetry and trying to figure out the meaning of the artwork, something came over me. I've never heard anything like this before. Something so different, yet catchy. As a whole, the CD completely surprised me.
After reviewing his previous material I did not know what kind of direction Witt would go in with a follow up. "Delicate Ordinary Need" is by far his finest performance to date, and a substantial achievement. With tunes like the upbeat "Whiskey Song" as well as "Bar Stool Poet", Witt has produced one of the most interesting, creative CD's I have heard a long time.
Every song on "Delicate Ordinary Need" is acoustic-based and was written by Witt. Donnie plays every instrument on the CD, and his musicianship has never before been so well displayed, playing guitar, harmonica, bass, piano and drums. Witt's fingerpicking is impressive on such tracks as "Between Us Two" and "Poison Was a Cure".
The album follows a simple theme of passion, as well as musical commentary on the virtues of life. The first two tracks take you head first into Donnie's world, filled with bar room stories, drinks for friends, and lost love. "Old Friend" may be the best song on the CD. There is also a song written for the now deceased legend Hunter S. Thompson titled "Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride". The poetry is gonzo-esque.
Witt's concentrated effort as a poet, with no limit to musicial boundaries, transforms to original material that goes places most would never dare. He has the courage to put himself out there, raw and straight forward, and this is what I ultimately find so appealing about him. One song talks about his fears while the next talks about his passions.
With elements of among the likes of Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, as well as old school blues/storyteller style folk music, Witt has arrived.
If you are just discovering Donnie Witt for the first time, be sure to pick up this CD. It is his finest work to date.
