Dumb Angel is the musical alter-ego of Saskatoon, SK based singer-songwriter Shaun Mason. A swirling, dream-like mixture of beautiful, wandering melodies and hypnotic acoustic guitars, Dumb Angel revolves between Mason the solo artist and a trio where he's joined by Melissa Nygren (Cracker Cats, Heartstrings) on vocal harmonies and glockenspiel and Patrick Schmidt (Slow Down, Molasses) on second guitar. While these hushed, spectral compositions evoke the music of Nick Drake, Red House Painters and other purveyors of moody, quiet folk, Dumb Angel manages to sound completely unique as it charts its own luminous musical explorations of self and place.

Dumb Angel's latest recorded offering and sophomore effort, âI Woke Up This Morningâ, sees Mason further exploring and developing the musical and lyrical themes set out in Dumb Angel's independently-produced and -released first album, 2006's âGhost Danceâ. But while âGhost Danceâ was recorded by Mason himself, slowly and meticulously overdubbing layers of vocal harmonies, guitars and other instrumentation over a few months, âI Woke Up This Morningâ was recorded completely live as a trio over the course of a few days in Mason's front room. A chronicle of return and renewal, âI Woke Up This Morningâ is a collection of georgeous, stripped down songs full of wonder, hope and that age-old search for strength and meaning in the madness.

Dumb Angel is by no means Mason, Nygren or Schmidt's first musical endeavor. Mason was a guitarist and founding member of Saskatoon space-rock legends Blood Music, and has also been musically involved with Slow Down, Molasses, Mahogany Frog, Lorca, Maybe Smith and The Cracker Cats. Performing as Dumb Angel since late 2004, Mason has built a respectable following, received a good deal of international attention, charted extensively on Canadian community radio, all the while performing constantly in Saskatoon, western Canada and in 2007 a series of dates in Seoul, South Korea. Nygren has herself enjoyed considerable musical success. As a member of âgypsy-rock revolutionariesâ the Cracker Cats, she has released two albums and toured extensively and internationally. Her latest project, Saskatoon country super-group The Heartstrings, including members of The Deep Dark Woods and Old Joe And The Truth Hurts, have released one album to great acclaim. Schmidt is a member of Slow Down, Molasses, another Saskatoon country super-group. SDM have released one EP, toured western Canada and will see the release of their first full-length album, âI'm an Old Believerâ, in October 2008.
