About Solari:
solari
biography
Solariâs thought provoking lyrics and international musical canvas provide the perfect backdrop for his voice. His songs encourage a musical discourse, challenging the banality of western popular music while managing to remain strongly within it. This stark blend of forms is a reaction to the complexities and cross-cultural exchange of our post-modern world.
Solari taught himself the guitar at twenty, listening to Joyce, Stanley Jordan and Sabicas. By teaching himself, Solari developed a style of playing and an understanding of structure that challenged typical songwriting, mixing American soul with Latin American bossa. âIâd argue that his music is from all over, capturing so many sounds, so much so that some songs must contain twice the beauty and creativity.â â J. Abu-Bakare. His signature voice was formed at a much younger age, when Solari would listen to old records such as Stevie Wonder, Julio Iglesias, Roy Ayers and Antonio Carlos Jobim.
At 18, Solari led the band âUrban Grooveâ and formed a fan base in London. On deciding to go solo, Solari began busking and it was on the street that he met artists, producers, booking agents and of course, new fans. He blended his songwriting technique with those of various producers and recorded fourteen original songs, seven of which are self-produced.
In the summer of 2007 Solari moved to Canada and began collaborating with Marinda. Together they recorded and produced âCup Of Teaâ and toured their live show throughout the East Coast of Canada. People responded positively to their double-bill set up, particularly songs they collaborated on. They were labeled âThe tenor sax and trumpetâ.
Together with Marinda, Solari has spent a year in Toronto, performing throughout the GTA as well as in cities such as New York, Halifax, Ottawa and Montreal. In 2009, they will move back to London in order to expand their audience.
About Marinda
Marinda
biography
âThe crowd is hypnotized by her original sound; a voice that finds beautifully peculiar notes and tones to compliment melodies in a way I have never heard.â J. Abu-Bakare
Marinda is moving in a different direction. Her quality is difficult to pinpoint. Itâs not just the musical or vocal quality, unique as that is, itâs more a charisma or an attitude that reveals itself immediately on stage or through speakers, like an answer to a complex question.
Marinda has been singing for two years and in that time she has appeared on over 50 international stages making a name for herself wherever she has performed. Her sound is eclectic, but her voice is signatory. She performs with Spanish guitar, upright bass and DJ, an intimate outfit that reaches as far as an orchestra. Her performances have been compared to the bossa-nova movement, the great female jazz vocalists of the 30âs and 40âs, the uncompromising flow of conscious hip-hop and the tender chanson of Parisian cool.
Upon returning from West Africa having come through a near-death experience, Marinda decided she would dedicate her time to music. She is currently based in her hometown Toronto and in 2008 released her second album 'Cup Of Tea' featuring close collaborator Solari, under their publishing label LuaSol.
Her upcoming full-length album 'Earthly Things' will be released in 2009. Together, Marinda + Solari have toured 'Cup Of Tea' throughout the East Coast, on CBC Radio Canada and local college radio. She has recently won the TIMA - Toronto Independent Music Award for 'BEST JAZZ" and was also nominated for âBEST LIVE ACOUSTICâ.
Marinda + Band have showcased at the Atlantic Jazz Festival alongside jazz luminaries such as Bill Frissell, Hilario Duran and Hugh Masekela, as well as at Torontoâs Honey Jam, Yonge and Dundas Square, North by NorthEast Festival, East Coast Music Awards and YWCA's 'week without violence'. They will also be performing at this yearâs urban music festival âManifestoâ at Nathan Philips Square in september.
In October 2008, Marinda + Solari will be moving to London UK in order to take their music to another audience.
