Details:
Who is NEMO?
Taking their name from 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, this Brooklyn, NY based duo is making a stir with their unique collisions of new wave, ethereal acoustic sounds, and inspired indie rock. On their debut album Signs Of Life, Luke McCartney and Dennis Tyhacz composed 17 original songs that exhibit a wide stylistic range for the listener.

Given the fact that Signs Of Life was recorded in a tiny apartment, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, outside of the confines of recording studios, McCartney and Tyhacz were able to concentrate on crafting songs without time constraints, using everything from glockenspiels and acoustic guitars, to overdriven amps and drum machines. While most artists' influences and musical styles tend to be associated with a particular decade, or musical movement, NEMO's music stems from a variety of influences from the 60's to today. From the Cure/New Order inspired pop of "Northern Light", to The Stooges reminiscent stomp of "The Burn", to the ambient Pet Sounds air of "The Sun Of Ulee", NEMO isn't afraid to wear their influences on their sleeves. In fact, their approach lets each song exist on it's own terms.

Lyrically, NEMO address everything from the current political climate ("The Burn"), to historical figures (Amelia Earhart takes flight in "Aviator") to mythical adventures ("Odyssey"). They introduce us to someone questioning mortality ("Eternity Of This") to someone questioning reality ("Fiction Of Reality"). They take us from the Mississippi- styled currents and euphoria of "Swimming In The Rhine" to introspective observations of life in the city ("Metropolitan").

Having experienced the highs of playing live and learning the advantages of self-production in previous bands, Dennis and Luke knew they wanted to continue their musical explorations and take their unique music into our world, one song at a time. Now that the Signs Of Life have been discovered, there's reason for repeated listening.

-Left Off The Dial.com

"This is undoubtedly a great sounding record."
- Delusions of Adequacy - George Ford (7.23.04)

"Lord knows we've been waiting for new wave and rock to marry for a long time."
- The New York Press (3.17.04)

"Given the limitations of recording in a New York apartment, the Brooklyn-based duo of Luke McCartney and Dennis Tyhacz have created a debut CD, Signs of Life, that sounds impressive..."- ShakingThrough.net (7.20.04)

"Signs of Life (Binge) has an aquatic feel to it...The album is frequently expansive, and occasionally propulsive, with floaty double-tracked vocals that seem to come from, if not 20,000, at least half a dozen leagues down."
- Time Out-NY (6.9.04)

"A strong sense of the romantic."-Crashinin.com

"The album ties together missing links between past decades in a way that clarifies the relationship between 60s psychedelic rock and 80s new wave." -11211 Magazine

"If this is just their debut, I can't wait until they surface again."-Splendid E-Zine
