Details:
SANDS OF ABERDEEN
- by Jed Marum with Hugh Morrison and Mason Brown is a Lonestar Stout production for Boston Road Records. It was recorded at Crystal Clear Studios in Dallas TX and at The Millstream in Toronto Ontario. The album was produced by Paul Mills.

ABOUT THE PLAYERS:
Jed Marum; guitars, lead and harmony vocals
Hugh Morrison; button "box" accordion, back-up vocals
Mason Brown; pardessus viol, banjos, banjola, guitar, lead and harmony vocals
Pete Dawson; whistles, Irish flute, back-up vocals
Jaime Marum; mandolin and octave mandolin, back-up vocals
David Shaw; Upright bass, back-up vocals
Curly Boy Stubbs, guitars and mandolin

A FEW COMMENTS ABOUT THE INSTRUMENTS:
- Viola de Gamba
No that is not a violin you hear playing the fiddle parts on this album. It is the Pardessus Viol; a fretted, stringed instrument that is bowed, and more closely related to the upright bass or the guitar then the violin. Mason Brown uses it on the album in place of the violin to play the fiddle parts and to work in particular with the âbox.â

The pardessus viol was developed in 17th-century France in order for viol players to play violin music. It is the same size and range as the violin, but has six strings tuned in fourths with a third, and has frets. Being a viol, it is played on the lap (a gamba).

- Box
Scottish exile Hugh Morrison plays button key accordion and jumps between his 3 row âHohner Shand Morinoâ and his 2 row âCastagnari Tommyâ.

The Shand Morino was made famous by the late Jimmy Shand & Hugh plays one of the only 300 of this model ever built.

The Castagnari is hugely popular among Irish Button Box players. They are B/C tuning for the 2 row & B/C/C 120 bass, for the 3 row Morino.

- Guitars, Banjos, Banjola, etc
6 and 12 string Guitars were used for the album in standard, drop D and various modal tunings. The guitars were made by Larrivee and by Grit Laskin. Likewise we used multiple banjos from Deering and Goldtone, in standard G, C, and modal tunings. The Banjola is hybrid instrument with the wooden body of a mandola or octave mandolin and the neck and string configuration of a 5 string banjo. It is played like a banjo and provides a very pretty and delicate sound. Octave and standard mandolins were used.

ABOUT THE SOUND:
A strong mix of Irish, Scottish and original songs and tunes. From driving, up-beat airs to beautiful, narrative songs expertly performed with humor and style. A fast connection of Celtic to American Celtic roots with unique instrumentation and refined musicianship. Seasoned professional performers.

REVIEWER COMMENTS:
"What sets Jed Marum apart from other Celtic/Folk artists is the performance concepts and delivery he brings to the stage â the historical significance, poignancy and emotion that his songs evoke, in addition to being a great singer and a stellar player. Jed is one of my favorite performers and we are happy to be on board with his Lonestar Stout project."

- Betsy Cummings, Entertainment Director for the North Texas Irish Festival
