In person, Jesse Goplen is soft-spoken, polite, even quiet. But get him up on stage and he simply unloads in a big, sometimes raging voice that has surprised even those who know him well. Jesse's new CD Cowboy manages to capture that live energy on a CD that looks like a little vinyl record.

Although the stripped-down, vocal-driven production and acoustic guitar stylings recall the folk and blues revival of the 1960s, a careful listen reveals an almost punk rock aesthetic. Jesse Goplen's style is dark, at times brooding, but he knows how to craft a minor chord hook. He pares the songs down to their bare essentials: the songs are mostly under three minutes, and the title song weighs in at a scant 2:18. There are no overdubs or studio tricks, the tracks are just Jesse performing live in front of two microphones - what you hear on the CD is what you get live.
