Rolling Stone Magazine, Nov. 2005, page 12: letter "Going to Pot" quote--According to the U.S. government, about 100 million Americans have used marijuana, and nearly 15 million use it at least monthly. In 2004, 771,605 Americans were arrested on marijuana charges, an all-time record. That's a huge market, and prohibition can't make it go away. What it has done is bar legitimate businesspeople from serving this market and given an exclusive franchise to a motley assortment of criminals. All this for a drug that is WELL DOCUMENTED TO BE LESS TOXIC OR ADDICTIVE THAN EITHER ALCOHOL OR TOBACCO (my caps). Wouldn't it make sense to try a system of common-sense regulation?
wrtten by Bruce Mirken of Washington, D.C.
This is a STRONG song; it addresses MANY social and spiritual issues.
1. that pot smokers aren't "dope fiends"
2. that pot is habit forming
3. that people in our government don't always tell
the WHOLE truth
My opinion of the whole pot issue is that it definitely
should be de-criminalized. The industrial-military complex
profits immensely from the 'crime' of pot smoking. One in every 75 men are in jail...MANY from drug arrests. Who
profits from this..? The prison builders for one. Bush's ex-sister-in-law claims he used drugs at Camp David! It's a known fact he used COCAINE. Clinton smoked pot. Why weren't they put in jail? You know why...because they are Fat Cats who get away with breaking the Law.
I don't smoke pot; don't want to; but, I don't think people should be put IN JAIL for smoking pot.
James, Nathan, and I were goofing around one day and recorded this in James' studio. The instant I heard James and Nathan 'rapping' in the living room with James' cool guitar licks I thought...wow...that's a hit...and raced in to join them. We just riffed off the top of our heads...that's it!
