Details:
The Paperbacks (Doug McLean, vocals and guitar; Jason Churko, guitar and vocals; Jaret Mcnabb, bass; Jack Jonasson, drums and vocals; Tanya Zubert, piano) are a band from Winnipeg, Canada with an extensive pedigree. The previous band that McLean fronted, The Bonaduces, released a number of singles and two full length albums ( 1997's 'K' is For Catherine and 1999's The Democracy of Sleep )which both spent months on college charts, the latter reaching #3 nationally in Canada and #85 nationally on the hard-to-crack CMJ charts in the USA. Touring heavily in North America, the band earned excellent international critical response, much of it focused on the quality of songwriting and McLean's unique lyrical voice. Democracy was also singled out for a regional award for best album, where it was stacked up against a number of major label releases. Painted Thin, another project featuring McLean in a shared singer/songwriter role, released one album ( 1999's Clear, Plausible Stories ) and toured extensively through Europe and the USA, garnering much critical attention along the way. With the demise of both of those projects, McLean has re-teamed with Bonaduces rhythm section Mcnabb and Jonasson to create something fresh. Joined by Jason Churko, former singer/songwriter of BMG/Vik recording artists Transister Sound & Lighting Co., and Tanya Zubert, current singer/songwriter in the long standing Winnipeg group The Mandarins, they have managed to blend a variety of musical influences (from indie rock to power pop and punk) into something unique. Maintaining a sizable fanbase from previous projects, and expanding it through limited touring and small-scale vinyl and internet releases, they have managed to generate enormous excitement around their depth of songwriting and energetic performances. 2003 will see the release of their much-anticipated debut full-length, An Episode of Sparrows, which was recorded and produced entirely by Mcnabb and the band between December 2001 and January 2003. Available June 3rd from Pshaw! Records, they will engage in extensive touring, as well as radio and print promotion throughout North America in support of the release.
