About Laura Cohn.....

Laura Cohn has always been a creative performing artist. Growing up in Highland Park, IL, she loved to sing, tap dance, play guitar, draw and write stories. When she was in High School, she produced a student variety show for 2 years. Her parents enrolled her in flight training and she became a private pilot at 17. She graduated from Sophie Newcomb College at Tulane University with a B.A. in Political Science. Laura began writing music after she graduated college. She pursued her own graphic design/art business in Chicago after working at a media company.

Laura was a closet songwriter for many years, mainly because she wasnât able to play and sing her own songs very well. She didnât have the technical skill to play the parts she wrote on the guitar or sing the melodies she had written. It took Laura many hours over many years to get to the point where she could sing and play her songs with any kind of comfort doing it. Lauraâs first attempt at performing her own songs in the Chicago area was a disaster due to her nervousness. Laura was so embarrassed that she went home vowing never to perform her music again.

Laura continued working on her music in private and then moved westward to Colorado in order to focus on her art. She came to a crossroads in her life and decided that playing at a coffee shop out of town would be a good distraction. She convinced a couple of her friends to take the road trip with her to Vail and then to Idaho Springs for pizza on the way back. So they went off to the mountains for an adventure. When they got to Idaho Springs, the pizza place they wanted to go to was closed, so they went to another restaurant bar instead.

While they were eating, a local drunk came up to the table and started talking to Laura and her friends. He was swaying and slurring his words but he told them they were beautiful, so Laura was happy to talk to him. Her friends told him that Laura was a musician and he brought the owner over to talk to her. The owner hired Laura to play a two day festival the following weekend on the spot and that was the first paid gig that Laura had ever been booked for.

She was supposed to go water skiing with some friends that weekend, (one of who worked at KBCO-FM), and got a call back from the radio station employee after she left a message to cancel plans with them. He had no idea that Laura was a songwriter, because that wasnât something Laura told people. He decided to come to see Laura perform at the festival both days and then invited her to record some of her songs at the stationâs Studio C in Boulder.

When Laura went down to the station to record, she met her first mentor, Ward Harston, who was the Chief Engineer at the station at the time. Laura recorded 3 songs and the following week her song âSilver Liningsâ was played on the station, which began her journey as a professional singer/songwriter. Ward had a PhD in music and played shows with Laura around town and acted as her music director when they played with other musicians. Laura was also booked for many live shows that the station hosted in Boulder and Denver.

When Desert Storm hit the news, Laura was angry about the war and wrote a song called, âLiving On A Planetâ. She was given the opportunity to record the song in a studio in Denver with a producer and some of her musician friends. Laura then called every radio station program director between Denver and Fort Collins and asked them to meet with her because she wanted people to hear her song. (She wasnât interested in writing to her local congress persons). Lauraâs song made the play list on one commercial station, KDHT, and was also played on several other stations.



After that, Laura enjoyed a wonderful experience performing locally and being a featured artist on local radio stations, magazines and newspapers. She met regional record label reps and learned more about the music business. She came to another crossroads in her life and felt in her heart that is was time to make a move somewhere else. After being a presence in the local music scene in Boulder, Laura moved to Telluride, CO to focus on her songwriting.

There she was given the opportunity to record her first full length CD of her music called âTellurideâ. She performed locally and throughout the mountain region and sold her CDs at performances and in local stores. Laura found her soul as a songwriter when she began writing music for a pastor at the Christ Church in Telluride and performing for their services on Sundays. It led to her writing a new style of songs devoted to inner happiness and exploring her relationship with God.

Many performances, live radio shows, air play of her songs on radio stations, community television show tapings and recording sessions brought Laura from Colorado to Arizona. Her parents had moved to Tucson and were unhappy with Lauraâs life as a musical artist in the mountains of Colorado, so Laura decided to spend a winter in Arizona to get them to stop complaining to her on a daily basis. Laura planned to go back to Telluride in the summer, but fell in love with a musician in town and got married instead.

She and her new husband moved to Los Angeles shortly after they were married and Laura got a job at a department store. Between her new job and marriage, Laura didnât find much time for her music. 10 months into her job she was chemically injured at work from exposure to formaldehyde, pesticides and other unknown chemicals and was put on workmanâs comp disability. She became very ill and didnât know what was wrong with her. 6 months after the injury she couldnât walk a mile without becoming totally exhausted.

Her health got much worse and she divorced her husband about a year after the injury. 3 years after the injury, Laura was suffering from severe chemical sensitivity and clinical depression. Luckily, one of her doctors put Laura in touch with some women who had experience dealing with environmental illnesses and told Laura what she needed to change in her lifestyle in order to get better. It took another 2 years before Laura regained enough strength to start playing her music again.

To aid in her recovery, Laura wrote, produced, and performed 2 one-woman shows of her music in a 4 month period. The following year she adapted the shows into a screenplay. A year later she began performing around Los Angeles. She was disturbed by politics in the news again and began seeking out a producer to record a spiritual song of hers. She was introduced to Del Oro Music in Studio City, CA and was talked into recording a full-length CD.

During the production of her CD, âBright Blue Skiesâ, Laura was inspired to seek salvation in Jesus Christ while attending church with her friends on a warm Easter Sunday. Laura had no plans of converting to Christianity that day, but decided to go to Christ at the service because she had never tried to be with Jesus before and had heard so many beautiful things about being with Him from friends of hers. Laura didnât think much of the prayer she said and didnât realize that Jesus would change her heart and her life so dramatically.

In a short period of time she was taken out of situations that were harmful to her and brought into a new awareness of how to live. Laura was always seeking God in her life and didnât know that the Lord she sought was Jesus Christ. The gift of the Holy Spirit that Christ gave Laura brought her an inner peace that she had never known before. She wrote 11 songs in the next 3 months and 6 of those songs were recorded for her new CD.

While finishing the production of her latest release, âBright Blue Skiesâ, Laura found true love and married her current husband, Paul Burton. Her CD, âBright Blue Skiesâ, spans the journey of Lauraâs relationships with the world in herself, God and other people. Laura Cohn writes a weekly newsletter to voice her observations, questions and musings about her life. She is an advocate of social kindness and attempts to convey concepts of awareness through her writing, and live performances.
