2008 marks the 25th anniversary of Winter Hours getting together and, sadly, the 5th anniversary of singer Joseph Marques' untimely passing. We thought that was a good enough reason to pay this overlooked band tribute.

Winter Hours was among those pop-minded groups that found itself right in the thick of the burgeoning college rock scene. (For those of you reading this who are too young to âgetâ the term âcollege rock,â just think âindie rockâ without the hoodies, messenger bags and ironic hipster stances, or perhaps a pre-pre-pre Hot Topic strain of alt-rock.) The New Jersey quintetâs musical and philosophical peers were spread out all over America â among them, Athensâ R.E.M. and Dreams So Real, North Carolinaâs Connells and Letâs Active, Austinâs Zeitgeist/Reivers, Californiaâs Game Theory, Connecticutâs Miracle Legion â and it wasnât uncommon for ardent fans of one combo to be just as vocal supporters of the other groups. We compared notes and passed around live tapes, often â as evidenced by the Michael Carlucci correspondence above â connecting with the bands themselves to ensure that when they did come to our towns theyâd know they were appreciated and would want to return. - Fred Mills
