Philip began his training as a singer and writer at the Broadway Church of Christ in Lubbock, Texas at the tender age of seven, or so. The church, a large one with an active membership of about 3,000, had a Preacher's training school that Philip, somewhat begrudgingly, attended all day every Saturday for more years than he can accurately recall. This school trained the congregation's young men on speaking and singing, and gave these brave souls the opportunity to hone their skills by performing for the saints each and every week at the Wednesday evening services. Philip originally sought a career in counseling as a student of psychology at Texas Tech University, but in 1990 decided to pursue music after becoming fully convinced it would be inappropriate to sing to his clients during counseling sessions.
