Details:
What happens when a sketch comedian/Beatles fanatic meets a cartoonist/Blondie fetishist? Chimp happens.

Chimp is the rock duo formed by Rob MacDonald and Dave Stewart from the otherwise laidback province of Prince Edward Island. MacDonald is known to Islanders for his 5 seasons with the comedy group Sketch-22; Stewart is behind And Yet I Blame Hollywood, a movie review cartoon strip for PEIâs arts and entertainment paper, The Buzz. In 2003, when Stewartâs cartoon was adapted as 26 two-minute animations for television and broadcast nationwide on CBCâs ZeD, MacDonald provided one of the voices for the animated series.

Forced to pick their genre, Chimp will say that theyâre âponkâ, a term coined by MacDonald to describe their combination of pop and punk. Thatâs an accurate description of what youâll hear when listing to Chimpâs debut CD, Thundercrack!. Check out tracks like The Living End, Killer Bees and Nectar to hear what he means.

Ponk is the sound that resulted when Chimp began recording in 1998. Back then, the duo recorded a baker's dozen of original songs in an impromptu recording studio in MacDonaldâs living room. âWhen we recorded the music initially," says MacDonald, "we decided we would be a studio-only band. Kind of like the latter-era Beatles, minus Yoko.â Using a 4-track cassette recorder that was rented for a couple of weeks, Stewart played bass (mostly) and MacDonald played guitar (mostly). Chimp didn't have a drummer, so they used pre-recorded drumbeats from MacDonaldâs cheap Casio keyboard. And that was that.

Until the spring of 2008. Updates in affordable computer technology made it possible for Chimp to digitize their original tracks, remove hiss, add some new vocals, remix, restructure (in a limited way), etc. The end result was Thundercrack!, 12 songs that Chimp describes as âpretty rocking, in a lo-fi wayâ. And it only took them ten years. Ask MacDonald about it and heâll say that it was Chimpâs attempt to compete with the delayed release of Guns ân Rosesâ Chinese Democracy. Ask Stewart about it and heâll say he hopes that Chimp is just in time to spearhead a grunge/riot grrrl revival.

That's the story of Chimp to this point. You can find out more about Thundercrack!, get Chimp updates, and watch The Living End video at www.ChimpIsABand.blogspot.com.
