AMBER LAWRENCE
Itâs a good thing singer/songwriter Amber Lawrence was an accountant in a former life, because the numbers are really starting to add up for her, on the chart that is.
What a year it has been for the Sydney girl. In the space of 12 months Amber has had 3 consecutive singles in the Top 5 Country Radio Charts - âThings That Bring Me Downâ, âGonna Flyâ and the third single âGood Girlsâ which hit the #1 position on both the Radio and CMC video chart â and stayed there for 5 weeks!
She has two Golden Guitar nominations (2008) for âFemale Artist of the Yearâ and âNew Talent of the Yearâ under her belt, and was recently the recipient of 4 of the 9 awards handed out at the Southern Star Independent Music Awards. Amber sure scooped the pool, picking up Album of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, Single of the Year (Gonna Fly) and to top it off â Artist of the Year.
Add to this, her album âThe Mileâ reached Number 4 on the Australian Country ARIA Chart, an amazing achievement for a debut album!
Continuing the momentum, a 4th single, the title track âThe Mileâ, was released from the album in October 2008. âThe Mileâ is a heart rending song about a fatherâs loss of his 16 year old jockey son in a racing accident and the last mile they walked together on the morning of the fatal accident. Itâs a true story, close to Amberâs heart, yet it is written as though it could apply to anybody who has lost a dear loved one.
Amberâs story is quite unique in the fact that she grew up in the urban city of Sydney, listening to Dire Straits and The Beatles and it wasnât until she expanded her musical tastes at the age of 17 that she fell in love with all things country. After completing a commerce degree at the University of NSW, Amber entered the work force as an accountant for Qantas but continued to mix music and career. That was until âThe Mileâ and her hectic touring schedule got the better of her, and she downed the spreadsheets and calculators to dedicate her time fully to music.
âIâd prolonged the decision for quite a while as in the early days of an artistsâ career youâve still got to pay the bills. I was touring, doing interviews and media engagements, trying somehow to be a part-time accountant and eventually I had to bite the bullet, but I donât regret the decision one bitâ, says Amber.
Amberâs early career success on radio and television came via her independently and self funded EP âIâve Got the Bluesâ which made Number 4 on the Country Music Charts and remained there for several weeks. This was the beginning for this stunning brunette who only graduated from the prestigious CMAA Australian College of Country Music in 2004.
Amberâs success comes from natural talent and four years of doing the hard yards touring, writing and honing her skills with pen and guitar before unleashing the results in an amazing debut album The Mile, produced by Rod and Jeff McCormack.
All songs on the album are written or co-written by Amber and demonstrate a talent to combine tuneful, original melodies with polished, mature lyrics to produce songs that really connect with audiences.
Amber has regularly appeared as a guest of TV programâs such as âSunriseâ, âThe Morning Showâ, âSusie Showâ, âMornings With Kerri Anneâ and the âChannel 10 Newsâ plus has featured in key glossy publications Cosmopolitan and the Australian Magazine. She also is quickly becoming known for her hosting talents. Amber was the âroving reporterâ for the 2SM Super Radio Network at this yearâs Golden Guitars in Tamworth and has hosted the Independent Country Music Awards for two years running.
Aside from touring the country with her band, Amber has teamed up with the McClymonts for a series of shows and more recently with fellow country artists Dianna Corcoran and Aleyce Simmonds under the moniker âChic Frontierâ - a 2 hour showcase thatâs been wowing audiences along the East Coast.
Amber also found time in her busy schedule to visit East Timor with The McClymonts to play for the Troops. âIt was an absolute honour to be asked to sing for our Troops. It certainly made me aware of how tough their job is, and how lucky we are to live in Australiaâ.
Mixing with and learning from the likes of Beccy Cole, John Williamson, Kasey Chambers, Troy Cassar-Daley, Adam Harvey and Melinda Schneider helped the dynamic performer to develop her natural ability to engage audiences. Her enthusiasm and natural talent led to offers to tour with artists like Adam Harvey, Melinda Schneider and The McClymonts.
Amber is presently writing new songs for a 2nd album to be released in the first quarter of 2009. Thereâs no stopping this girl.
