Dick Wellstood was born in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1927 and started playing professionally in 1945. He played with Bob Wilber's band until 1950, then with Jimmy Archey until 1953. After stints with Sidney Bechet, Rex Stewart, Roy Eldridge and Charlie Shavers, Dick joined Conrad Janis' Tailgaters in October of 1953. He was intermission pianist in Eddie Condon's in 1956, and was house pianist at the Metropole 1959-1961 and Nick's 1961-1963. After several years on the road with the Gene Krupa Quartet, Dick settled in New Jersey in 1966 and began free-lancing in the New York area. During the remainder of his career, Dick Wellstood literally toured the world, performing in many European cities as well as throughout the United States. He appeared at many different labels. Dick also recorded on four other albums in the MMO Catalog which will appear ultimately. His passing on July 24th, 1987 was a severe loss to the jazz community.
