Details:
l.a. jazz scene dpq danny pucillo quartet you know what i mean (dann records ) with saxophonist bill perkins driving hard bop anthems such as "johnny come lately", danny pucillo's quartet session contains both forceful power and gentle lyricism.

perkin's fluid tenor and dry alto can fit any jazz situation.

here the saxophonist blends with guitarist jinshi ozaki, bassist chris colangelo and drummer pucillo.

the leader's four original compositions - one ballad and three burners- give the quartet plenty of room both for stretching out and for interplay.

pucillo's eleven-minute piece "you know what i mean" becomes much more than a hard bop burner as it moves from scene to scene in mini-suite fashion.

variety is what makes pucillo's session stand out from the crowd. his extended solo drum work remains tasteful and expressive without ever appearing loud.

both perkins and ozaki carry the lion's share of this quartet's melodic work.

pucillo's ballad "ruth" and ozaki's ballad "niyansukes dream" feature the saxophonist and guitarist in lovely examples of lyrical performance.

pucillo's quartet is one to catch on the l.a. jazz scene, either at a local club date or on record.
