For those struggling to find a gospel artist whoâs not too traditional, not too contemporary, but somewhere in the middle, Gerald Hinton is the one. His style is such an incredible blend of traditional and contemporary, it warrants attention from all audiences.
Born in the small town of Apex, North Carolina, Hinton is one of eight children, and the only boy of three that is able to hear and talk. He is the only child to pursue a career in the music industry and enjoys the support of his large, loving family.
At the age of six, Hinton began singing with the church choir at St. Maryâs Free Will Baptist Church. Though he grew up listening predominantly to traditional gospel music, his style is nothing of the sort; his musical ability stretches beyond Gospel. His professional career began at the age of thirteen when he went on the road with Howard Thomas and the Pearly Gates. They sang acapella on live radio for three years, with Hinton acting as the lead singer. When they performed in concert a collection was always taken for the âLittle Boy.â
Hinton went on to play with an R & B band in high school in the late seventies and traveled the east coast. After experiencing theater in high school, he attended Shaw University and majored in drama with a minor in music.
In the early eighties, Hinton returned to his Gospel roots when he began singing with Johnny Holloway and the Gospel Jubilees, which led him to the creation of Gerald Hinton and the New Redeemers. They released two projects, From Way Back and Groom Me. The album Groom Me produced the hit video Itâs Me Oh LORD, which has aired on BET, the Word Network, the Dream Network, and other national and local television outlets. It reached number one on the MBC Top Gospel Video Countdown, and is still being played today.
Hinton has worked with many legendaries such as the Gospel Southern aires, Shirley Caesar, Lee Williams and the Spiritual Qcs, John P. Kee, the Mighty Clouds of Joy, Willie Neal and the Gospel Keynotes, and the Canton Spirituals. He has also collaborated with producers Willie Hill, Craig Woolard, former lead singer of the Embers, and Denver Wright.
Geraldâs latest CD entitled You Donât Know How Blessed You Are was originally intended to be a solo project, but after his successful and stellar connection with music producer Denver Wright, it seemed only appropriate to include the entire group. You Donât Know How Blessed You Are is a collection of works that can stir up movements of the limbs, praises from the heart, and great thoughts from the mind. Hinton brings forth his ministry by delivering songs such as the title track, a mid-tempo groove that motivates one to count their blessings, He I Owe, a haunting track that mimics the childhood song Old McDonald, and Meet You In the Middle, a duet with former Embers lead singer, Craig Woolard. It is evident GODâs plan and timing for Gerald Hinton are at the forefront.
