Mar Vista, Californiaâs latest contribution to contemporary music and equine enthusiasm is LA Weekly Music Award winning band Xu Xu Fang. Not to be confused with 17th century Chinese artist Xu Fang, Xu Xu Fang is a dark-and-brooding, slow-and-rolling musical experience like something youâd hear at a Laserium show or listen to on big headphones in the back of a conversion van.

Xu Xu Fang, featuring Bobby Tamkin, formerly of sonically complex bands The Warlocks and Hovercraft, has anywhere from six to ten members and up to four guitars, creating a layered, psychedelic sound you would expect to hear emanating from a wooded bungalow in Laurel Canyon circa 1972. The rainy sounds of Xu Xu Fang echo early Black Sabbath with whispery vocals that tend toward Elliott Smith and My Bloody Valentine.

Hailed as âlocal innovators,â by the Los Angeles Times, Xu Xu Fang has been around in fits and starts since 2001, when they released the curiously titled record, Los Angeles During The Winter of â99. Alternative Press rated the bandâs album 4 out of 5 stars, calling their live performance, âOutstanding!â The LA Weekly described the group as a âKnockout Act!â

Xu Xu Fang recently released, The Mourning Son CD/EP. The Mourning Son received 8 out of 10 stars at Pop Matters, and placed Xu Xu Fang in the Myspace Music Spotlight. Liam Gowing, City Editor of The Onion, describes Xu Xu Fang as, âEnormous, dark, psychedelic, and beautiful, full of meditative moods that haunt the diaphanous triangle formed by Pink Floyd, Radiohead, and Sigur Ros.â

7 Days Now, mixed by Mark Needham (Fleetwood Mac, The Killers) continues Xu Xu Fangâs tradition of heavy tunes and space-like ambience. Xu Xu Fang opened the Los Angeles date of the recent Swervedriver reunion tour, and appear along side Bat For Lashes and The Dandy Warhols on Perfect as Cats: A Tribute to the Cure.
