FOLK: like Ani, ROCK: Folk Rock

Details:
One of Rachel's favorite singers is Ella Fitzgerald (indeed, if you catch Rachel in a live performance, she'll sometimes sing an a cappella version of "Dream A Little Dream" in the style of Ella) - but she sounds nothing like her!

Rachel sounds a little more like a cross between Sarah McLachlan and Dar Williams. Sometimes her lyrics are reminiscent of Tori Amos, and her harmonies and strumming scream of the Indigo Girls. You can even compare her to Ani DiFranco when you're listening to the last track on the CD, "Blue-eyed, Blonde-haired"... but you'll have to buy it to find that out.

"A Look" was one of the first tracks Rachel wrote, while still in her sexual-orientation-exploratory phase in high school. It was written after a week of listening to nothing but Dar Williams.

Mothers show up quite a bit in the song titles, but neither song is actually about Rachel's mom. "Dear Mother" is about the mother of a friend who passed away. "Mom's favorite" is Rachel's mom's favorite song on the CD. It used to be sung much higher...but Rachel decided that the lower key was more pleasing to her ears.

"the aftermath of two words" was born on the beach. For lack of any instruments other than pen, paper, and voice, Rachel wrote out the melody in solfege syllables.

If you live in or around New York City or Philadelphia, sign up for Rachel's email list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rachel_music or through her website at www.rachelrossos.com. She sends all concert information to the music list. There is a poetry list as well, for those of you who love to read the words as they spill out from her pen.
