Ray Kamalay, Leader of The Red Hot Peppers

This album covers alot of ground and Robin Lee Berry is a singer-songwriter who remains very much unclassifiable. This comes through on Ahna Kick a Hole in the Sky in which she mixes her own swell-crafted songs with the works of Van Morrison, Neil Young, Garnet Rogers and Greg Brown.

This is a collection of live performances and studio collaborations that span a decade and include a guest appearance by Greg Brown in a live performance singing Never So Far with Robin and tho she turns in great versions of Neil Young's Old Man and Van Morrison's Into the Mystic, it is her own songs that stand up for repeated playing especially the rhythmic title tune Ahna Kick a Hole in the Sky (which includes harmonies by her daughter AnnaBelle and most of Northern Michigan's finest musicians!). Then there's the whispered and tender delivery of The Only Man stepping off the page with it's beauty and originality and the emotional There are Some Things (a reference to her children, Woody, AnnaBelle, Homer and Rubi, growing up and leaving the nest).

Bloom (co-written with her youngest, Rubi, and graced by both daughters' harmonic debut in the studio) climbs up and back down the ego into the wash of a rich and hopeful "turn up the volume" overlapping choruses and then moves into her composition Spring Fever, also a live recording, a tune that could slip comfortably into any jazz fake book.
Also in this mix is her complete version of Brown's Hey, Baby, Hey which stands out as uniquely intense and sincere and was included on Brown's 2002 Red House Release "Going Driftless an artists tribute to Greg Brown", in which several favorite womens voices (Lucinda Williams, Ani DeFranco, Gillian Welch, Iris Dement, Ferron, Eliza Gilkyson, Shawn Colvin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Browns three daughters and more) offered renditions of Browns songs to this compilation album whose royalties continue to be donated to The Breast Cancer Fund.

Not to overlook the little gem of a song written by Canadian singer/songwriter and master musician Garnet Rogers who allowed her to contribute a few lines of her own to Soul Kiss.

All in all a very pleasing disc.
