Maohl's GIFT was founded by the German saxophone player Markus Ohler in summer 2007. Studying Jazz at the Vienna Conservatory he was bored by the idea of playing standards most of the time, so he founded this new group to realize his ideas.
The compositions are clearly jazz, but they are also inspired by the grunge bands like Soundgarden he listened to as a teenager, which especially comes out in the expressive solos as well as in some compositions like Meat The Fish or Spinne, which was written by the guitar player HP Freudenthaler. So this music isn't only for jazz fans. The intention was to create music which is definetly jazz, but which one could like without even expecting to to like such music called jazz. This is high energy music, which is complex but not difficult to understand, because it first hits the listeners stomach, and then the ears and the brain!
