Details:
The Rob Rinderer Project was a dream of Rob's for many years that just recently came to fruition with the help of his wife Carrie and his friends Rich Nibbe, Keith Felch, Dave Owens, Mitch Ross, Norm Stockton, Matt Bissonette and Chariya Bissonette. Their debut CD "Feel Like An Alien" is a "concept album" that takes the listener on a journey of life, dreams and adventure. The lyrics are at times thought-provoking, uplifting, moody, challenging and funny. "The idea was to get to the nitty-gritty of life, the real stuff we all go through, the big questions, without being too heavy," says Rob.
Musically, Rob's goal was to start a band that was a jam-band in approach, but that had its own unique and modern sound with a diverse background of influences. The result is a very engaging project with influences ranging from The Beatles to The Dave Matthews Band to Steely Dan to Phish to Miles Davis to Sheryl Crow to Pink Floyd to Coldplay to Daniel Lanois and the list goes on and on. Rob says, "It's quite funny actually. I've kept a list of influences that other people say they hear in the project and some of the names are so polar-opposite that it's amazing. At the same time though, I'll usually hear why they're saying what they're saying. It makes me realize we achieved our goal and I'm psyched about that." Bottom-line however, is the fact that "Feel Like An Alien" is a wholly unique and fresh piece of art.
The players on the project are very strong technically, but have lots of creative, musical, and emotional depth as well. Combined, they have worked with a who's who of recording artists including Billy Preston, Thomas Dolby, Ringo Starr, Peter Frampton, Michelle Shocked, Brandon Fields, Crystal Lewis, Mark Lindsay, Richie Furay, Brian Wilson, Don Henley, Jennifer Knapp, Darrell Mansfield, Boz Scaggs, ELO, Fernando Ortega, Two Or More, Luna Halo, Joe Satriani, Ric Flauding, Jeff Lorber, Lincoln Brewster, Margaret Becker, and many more. The project was produced by Rob and mixed with the help of veteran producer John Andrew Schreiner.
"One thing people may not realize," mentions Rob, "is that most of the album was done live. Drums, bass, guitar, two keyboard parts, and sax were generally done live in the studio. Additional guitar, keyboard, percussion, and sax tracks were overdubbed later on certain songs as well as the vocals." The result is a very spontaneous, in the moment, feel. Another interesting fact is that the four short instrumental pieces on the album were not only played completely live, but were also entirely improvised on the spot with no preconceptions of what they would sound like. "At the end of one of the tracking days, we turned out the lights completely and played whatever we felt. Dave and I couldn't even see our hands much less our instruments! Very interesting!" Listen to track 15, "Infinity Lots" to hear what came from this jam.
"I hope the project will encourage you, entertain you, challenge you, and make you smile," concludes Rob. Check out the clips of "Feel Like An Alien" and go to www.robrinderer.com for upcoming gig info and more. Enjoy!!!
