"SONGWRITING GENIUS."
TEN POETIC TUNES ASSIMILATING COUNTRY, ROCK AND JAZZ

10 MP3 Songs
COUNTRY: Country Rock, FOLK: Power-folk

Details:
"This CD brings together Knitting Factory Record Artists Zony Mash, featuring Wayne Horvitz (Bill Frisell oftentime producer) with songwriting genius Donald Rubinstein.

This work stays more 'in the pocket' than some of Rubinstein's previous efforts but still touches on elements of folk, jazz, rock, blues and country, including a 17 minute finale, DEMON BLUES.

This recording was co-executive produced by actor ED HARRIS and grew out of Ed's admiration for Donald's earlier effort with guitarist Bill Frisell, TIME AGAIN. "
Derek Sivers

"STANDOUT SONGS" THE LOS ANGELES TIMES

"His songs are haunting in text and blend jazz, blues, folk and soul in their rendering. His sad, sultry, slightly raspy voice has the quality of a man worn down. The sounds and images linger long after."
Dave DePino, DRAMALOGUE

"Like a less talkative Leonard Cohen...Darkly fascinating tales, this is the soundtrack to every solitary late-night drive you've ever taken. You don't have to be headed through the middle of nowhere, but it helps...A veteran of movie soundtracks, Rubinstein is accustomed to creating evocative works; when he's set free to score the movies in his mind, the results are often picture perfect."
George Zahora, Splendidezine

"Rubinstein is a poet, storyteller, composer, and singer, a bearded Beatnik railing against the phoniness of LA to the extent that you wonder why he?s still hanging out there. Maybe because it provides such good material, like "Rubber Cot," his hilarious screed aganst surgically enhanced women. Rubinstein sings like an animal, his emotions untrammeled by technique, his grizzled voice cracking with half-ironical desperation or descending to a conversational murmur. His previous CD was a series of duets with Bill Frisell, and he shares with the guitarist a love of all-American idioms; his tunes have an instantly iconic qulaity, rooted in blues changes. "Fire Whirl" is a lovely bit of two-beat C & W ("You're a sky/of green blue/diamonds fallin'/down upon the earth") with some convincing country pickin? from the guitar wild man Timothy Young, while "River of Love"soars on gospel hopes with Robin Holcomb adding inspired harmony."
