Album This Is The Night

SLIM SANDY - The hillbilly boogie boy! 'Slim Sandy' was born in a northern Canadian mining town in 1959 to Swedish parents, and grew up in a rural dairy farming valley in southern Quebec. As a kid he would listen to his father's 78 records by Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five, Fats Waller, and Slim Gaillard (who he got the nick name 'Slim' from) and then at the age of 12, he started playing guitar, exposed to country music when the family went out to barn dances. At the age of 19 he moved into the city of Montreal and attended blues and rock and roll shows, privileged to see many blues greats such as Professor Longhair, Big Mama Thornton, and Junior Wells. In 1980 Slim and his brother Eric formed a band that played 50's rock and roll, songs by Eddie Cochran like "C'mon Everybody". In 1984 Slim joined the band, the Hardrock Goners, playing drums for Ray Condo. As a band they made five albums, Crazy Date, Hot'n'Cold, Condo Country, Hillbilly Holiday and Come On, Ray and the Goners played together for 10 years, touring Canada, and Europe three times playing at Hemsby in 1992 and 1993. In 1988, Slim Sandy co-founded the Crazy Rhythm Daddies, influenced by Bob Wills, Milton Brown and other western swing bands. The Crazy Rhythm Daddies made five albums in all, and played Hemsby, the International Montreal Jazz Festival, and the Ottawa Jazz Festival in 1997. In 2000, while still playing with the Crazy Rhythm Daddies, Slim started playing drums with the Howlin' Hound Dogs. Their debut album 'Jitter Bop Baby' was loaded with authentic rockabilly tunes, which they performed at Viva Las Vegas and Hemsby in 2003. The band also backed up Sophia Wolff, singing western swing and rockabilly, recording on her debut CD. Since 2003 Slim has played as a one-man band, and sometimes with a trio, doing hillbilly boogie and country rhythm and blues, strumming his guitar, blowing the harp and stomping out the beat!
