My story is one of permutations. Every so often I find myself with any different number of people or places or things, and I also find that at the end of the day, it's just me again. So, in creating this album I had this very lonely sense that most other people felt the same way.
The first song, "Telescopes," is one of the most upbeat songs I've ever written. However, it's about longing for something you probably will never ever get to have and coming to terms with that. The second track, "Gutterchild," is the tale of a wondering soul who encounters someone of the feminine persuasion and rides trains with her across the country, only to lose her and find himself alone again. The third track is one of my most catchy to date--Start. Stop. Go! I guess this song is about that nagging sense that everything you ever do is wrong and the only way to get over that is to just do it anyway in the hopes that you'll one day be vindicated by some type of success. I wrote that song at a make or break point as a musician where I had writer's block and the only thing I could think of was how I kept starting and then stopping. Finally, I had enough and just said to myself, "Go!" The fourth track I wrote last year when I looked at a newspaper and saw the headline "Military trucks and helicopters looking for Survivors in Flood." I thought it had this strange but alluring sense of poetry, so I cannibalized it and made it into the first line of "World." The fifth song, "Max" is a reference to the children's book "Where the Wild Things Are," by Maurice Sendak. At the time of writing it last year, I was going through my own metamorphosis and moving to New York City, and I felt that it was fitting to write a song about it. The opening line "The open sea is scary from the boat, but Max can't live his entire life on shore..." is a reference to that artistic urge to live on the edge of comfort in exchange for a sense of daily adventure. New York City is the land of Wild Things. The second to last song on Permutations, "White light," is an ode to an old friend of mine who changed my life. It's about that feeling that happens every so often when things just seem to "click" and life is perfect. However, the feeling always seems so short lived. The final track on the Permutations EP, "Bohemian Girls" is in homage to the fine young women that populate Williamsburg. Part tongue-in-cheek, this song encapsulates so much about how I feel right now--one year after moving to Brooklyn. So here is the Permutation(s) EP. I hope you enjoy the glimpse I've given you into the writing process which it took to get you these songs.
