Details:
Since QuinTango's instrumentation is not that of the usual Argentine orchestra, we must arrange each piece. Before 2000, we did our own arrangements or worked with two Washington composer/arrangers, Carmelo Pino, and Jim Kessler, who did our symphonic arrangements. All that changed on a trip to Buenos Aires in 2000, when we met an amazing musician and wonderful pianist, the legendary Osvaldo Berlinghieri. Since that meeting, Maestro Berlinghieri has provided us with over a dozen arrangements, five of which are included on 'To Buenos Aires with Love.' We were so moved by the the generosity and talent of the many musicians we met in Buenos Aires that we dedicate this CD to them and the incredible music they have created.
One of the amazing things about QuinTango is the way it puts us in touch with both people from our past and strangers around the world who hear our music on the web and fall in love with it. If you fit either description, feel free to email us. I will list here the wonderful members of QuinTango's expanding family:
QuinTango Personnel:
Violinists: Joan Singer (founding member) and Paula Akbar
Cellist: Jorge Espinoza
Pianist: Bruce Steeg (founding member)
Double Bass: Libby Blatt (founding member)
CDs:
There are five QuinTango CDs. The first two CDs ('QuinTango' released in 1998 and 'Secret Places' released in 2000) feature the original quintet: Joan Singer, Rachel Schenker, Irma Cripe, Libby Blatt and Bruce Steeg; the first CD also includes music by composer and bandoneonist Alex Muzio. The third CD, 'To Buenos Aires with Love,' released in 2003, features Joan Singer, Paula Akbar, Jorge Espinoza, Libby Blatt and Bruce Steeg, as well as guest bandoneonist Daniel Diaz. The fourth CD ('QuinTango Live! - released in 2005) was recorded live at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. Performers include Joan Singer and Paula Akbar, violins; Jorge Espinoza, cello; Libby Blatt, bass; Jeffery Watson, piano. QuinTango's most recent CD is 'Triunfal,' released in 2008. It features arrangements by Osvaldo Berlinghieri and Mauricio Marcelli, incuding golden age gems and three of Piazzolla's best known pieces. Personnel include Joan Singer and Jennifer Rickard, violins; Kerry Van Laanen, cello; Libby Blatt, bass; Phil Hosford, piano, and guest Carina Losano, whose gives a memorable rendition of "Balada para un Loco."
