Details:
The newly established Subnoto12 is the first Russian record label, aimed at advancing bass music in the country, call it dubstep, grime or however else. Meanwhile "Russian Subs Vol.1" is the label's first step on this treacherous path. The main aim of the "Russian Subs" compilation, which focuses on the national scene, is to both showcase Russian dubstep to the listener and show new angles of the musical genre. The CD presents five Russian musicians: Mek, Strider, Lhasslo, Urbanite and Mindlab, each with his personal interpretation of the difficult to define term dubstep.

Anton Mek is already well known in the Russian dubstep circles. One of the first to have begun playing dubstep in Moscow, Mek has been remembered by many for his DJ sets always filled with his own tracks and experiments invloving the use of live instruments. He started his musical activities in the field of experimental electronica, while always being enamoured with reggae and dub. That's why in his tracks Anton, seamlessly mixes depth, melody and drive, which combined make you move to the beat.

Alexander Strider is the youngest participant on the compilation, but with this in mind is also easily the most experienced. He started making music a long while ago in the late 1990s and has never limited himself to any one particular musical style. Alexander has successfully tried himself in not only break beat oriented styles of music, but in psy-trance and experimental electronica... His love of music and zealousness in working on it have led him to the recording studio to work as a professional arranger. He assembles dancefloor killers, using samples from old video games, kung-fu films, based on mutating basslines and complex beats; all sprinkled with at first unseen to the bare eye production techniques.

Maxim Lhasslo is known as the founder of the Graavery band from the city of Saratov, which mostly makes hard to categorize music, where the main ingredients are words. Graavery have already released their debut record "Mystries of War", but for this compilation Lhasslo has submitted a number of tracks from his new solo record which is in the works right now. Here in the space mostly inspired by minimal-techno, atmospheric lyrics are layered upon no less atmospheric, tweaked beyond recognition samples and pumping low frequency bass.

Vasily Urbanite became a part of the Russian dubstep scene after a long stint in indie hip-hop, where he grew up as a Dj and producer. But his second infatuation was always with experimental sounds, both dance oriented and not. Having also been one of the first to start incorporating dubstep into his sets in Moscow, later he completely switched to playing it exclusively. But the past has firmly engraved itself in his very particular mixing style and selection, which allowed him to become a wanted guest at almost every one of the capital's dubstep parties. For the compilation Urbanite presented the results of his searches and experiments as a producer, which attempt keep the complexity of his arrangements together with sometimes uneasy rythms, while not losing the danceability of the material.

Perhaps one of the least well known artists for those who keep an eye on the Russian dubstep scene is Dmitry Mindlab. He has come from the dancehall and the ragga-jungle scenes and already has a number of explosive performances under his belt at the events organized by Trude Bwoiz Cartel of which he is one of the main participants. In his music he uses both reggae motives and the mystical samples from the USSR sci-fi movies of the 80s all superimposed upon fat beats and bass and even though, he mostly uses tempos untypical for dubstep, he has most definitely managed to capture that sacred vibe of it.
