John Carlin has been a respected songwriter, musician, and performer in NYC for more than a decade. A former RCA recording artist, he began teaching music classes for toddlers in 2000 as a way to spend more time with his daughter. In 2006, he founded The Kids Music Underground, an innovative approach to early childhood music education. That same year, he released his debut family album, First Time For Everything (âone of the best kids albums weâve heard in some time â âTimeOutNY Kids). In the meantime, he began performing family concerts, solo, and with his band, also called The Kids Music Underground. Before long, they were selling out esteemed venues and festivals â The Living Room, Southpaw, Madison Sq. Park, Bay Street Theatre, World Café Live â and being voted âone of the best kidsâ band in NYCâ ( TimeOutNY Kids 2007).

Throughout it all, John continued to maintain a weekly teaching schedule for hundreds of children and their families, entertained thousands of kids at countless birthday parties, and managed to write some of the most engaging, catchy, and heartfelt songs in the genre. All the while being an equal-share single parent in NYC.
With the upcoming release of Welcome To The Kids Music Underground, John has further expanded his vision of family music as entertainment and educational tool.

âI want to teach kids about global cultures through music. Make this Big World a little smaller and more accessible to little people, in fun and groovy ways. With this new album, weâve brought in elements of Brazilian music â samba, bossa nova, and rolling West African rhythms. A lot of the songs are pretty sophisticated â but Iâd rather challenge kids than play down to them. I mean, they get it â theyâre a lot smarter than we think they are. And why not make music that parents can appreciate and enjoy too, and not just tolerate? After all, they have to listen to it 30 times during that road trip to Grandma's - so it better be good!â
