The Second Vatican Council declared that Âthe musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art. The Council fathers then commanded that Âthe treasure of sacred musicÂbe preserved and fostered with very great care. The Church of St. Agnes, located near Grand Central Terminal in midtown Manhattan, has for many years been prominent in the effort to obey the Council's orders.
The ÂTridentine Latin Mass is celebrated every Sunday, with music provided by some of New York City's finest professional musicians. This CD offers a sample of the rich variety of music offered at St. Agnes. Since the selections on the CD are from Âlive recordings there are inevitably occasional flaws, as well as background noises ranging from Sanctus bells to crying babies. These imperfections are retained as evidence that the Latin Mass, far from being a museum or a concert hall, is in fact a vital part of an active parish.
