Details:
The name Stereovision first appeared to songwriter D. Camp as he curled up to sleep in the back of his van in a Dallas truck stop. It sat on a scrap of paper in his wallet for years before it came to be on the front of the moody, disco-touched debut CD from Camp and creative partner Nancy Hess.
Originally conceived as a collection of state changing environments more than traditional pop songs, the record started its life as a series of sprawling, amorphous soundscapes. Over time the unruly pieces were pared down and shaped until they looked suspiciously like pop songs. By its conclusion, dreamy instrumentals like "The Vehicle" and "I Contain Multitudes" sat comfortably next to the (relatively) earth bound disco of "I Wanna See You Around" and the space rock of "Peel Back and See".
Themes of isolation and loneliness are underscored by an optimistic determination to make some kind of contact. From the tongue-in-cheek barroom desperation of "I Wanna See You Around" to the Abba-infused "1 +1 is a Number" to the Major Tom radio transmission of "Reclining Nude" there is the idea that the lover is out there, somewhere. Waiting.
Hess' gifts as an engineer and producer elevate this basement recording beyond its humble origins, and her seasoning as a Warner Bros. recording artist with Seven Day Diary lends weight to her composition and playing skills. Camp's years of van touring with punk rock bands, homelessness, devotion to yoga, and time spent recovering from a nervous collapse bring the emotional power and feeling of an alien trying to dial in the right frequency to broadcast his message.
Stereovision is a make-out record, a driving record, a dance record on the edge of this dimension. Pop songs that can change your state.
Camp and Hess can also be heard on TV, radio, and film with music composed through their business Lift Music as well as with their ambient project Sway.
