Details:
An Armenian, born in Lebanon in 1955, it was at the age of 4 that Irma Toudjian first began playing the piano and discovered the passion of her life.
Irma displayed her exceptional musical talents during her time at the Conservatoire in Beirut, Lebanon, and upon completion, further pursued her passion for music at the Ecole Normale de Musique, in Paris, France, while simultaneously attending the Conservatoire de Tours in Tours, France. As a culmination to an outstanding musical journey, Irma went on to complete her studies at the prestigious Sorbonne, in Paris, France.
At the end of the eighties, Irma discovered the island of Sardinia, Italy, and decided to reside there in 1990. A true multi-tasker, Irma had not only become a concert pianist, but also created an international musical competition « Premio Gramsci » which caters to young pianists that she discovers, takes them under her wing as a mentor, perfects their talents, and opens the doors to a successful musical career. As part of this rigorous competition, these artists are brought before a group of renowned artists, who judge their talents.
Her overwhelming creativity, combined with her unyielding determination, inspired the inception of musical and cultural events, specifically, « Le Salon de Musique » and « Racconti dâArmenia » in Cagliari, and le Festival « Les Arts Florissants de la Sardaigne » in Paris, France. These events have been so well received, that they are now held annually, with new and diverse programs each year.
As founder and President of the association, « Suoni & Pause », she has made the aforementioned activities come to life. Irma also pursues a career as a concertist and composer in which she delivers us with a unique feeling born from the crossing of cultures that have impacted her life from the majestic Mountain of Massis in Armenia, to the lyrical coastline of Lebanon, to the capital of the arts, Paris, and finally to the marvelous land of Sardinia where all the cultures she has experienced symbolically unify into one.
Irma has been influenced by Schuman and Schubert, her favorite composers and especially affected by the current times, which she expresses in her compositions with the subtlety of ancestral melodies coupled with contemporary tonalities ; exquisite and harmonious expressions with bursts of energy, that takes us away on a musical journey as though, engulfed in a trance.
« Ritratti », released in 2005 was Irma Toudjianâs first album. Comprised of 14 unique pieces, much like a puzzle, this album introduced the very essence of an inspired composer.
The second album, « Aghen » first conceived in 2006, brought us more original compositions by Irma Toudjian, as well as masterpieces in her own interpretation by other well known composers, namely, Gurdjieff/de Harmann and Komitas.
« March in the Desert » is her third album that she completed in 2008. The album pays hommage to her Armenian ancestors and the Armenian Diaspora and is the muse its title.
She recounts the long road that the Armenian deportees had to endure from Anatolia through the Syrian desert. Along this cruel voyage, hundreds of thousands of Armenians were scattered like shattered glass, throughout a land filled with relentless hostilty.
