Details:
Toronto singer/songwriter Darin Yorstonâs style is a uniquely twisted blend of country, folk, blues and bluegrass that defies easy categorization, and fuses the sounds of the past with modern influences while staying true to the roots and appealing to a wide range of audiences. He calls it Crabgrass, but says âyou can call it what you want.â Simplicity is a key ingredient, in opposition to the histrionics of todayâs country music and the flashiness that clutters so much of modern bluegrass. This is no new-country, nor is it traditional; this is real, honest music, in the tradition of troubadours like Townes Van Zandt, Hank Williams, Bill Monroe, Steve Earle, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson thatâs equally suited to the back porch or the local tavern; the city or the country; the good times or the bad.

After several years of wandering along various paths, musical and otherwise, and a two and a half year run with the Wayside Ramblers, Yorston has released his debut solo album, âBack Home.â Itâs an entirely home-grown production, performed and produced by Yorston in his home studio, playing guitar, banjo, mandolin, and harmonica, and featuring only two guest musicians on two of the fifteen tracks, avoiding excessive studio trickery in favour of a more natural sound that keeps the spirit of the music intact. Overall, the songs reflect a variety of moods, feelings, experiences, and states of mind, while conjuring up a cast of characters from lovers and leavers to losers and liars, all longing for that elusive place in time and space that so many of us call back home, which is often just out of reach.

When asked why heâs chosen to play this kind of music, Yorston answers, âItâs been around me in some form my whole lifeâ¦I couldnât really not play it.â Indeed, itâs been in his veins since he was first shown how to play âTom Dooleyâ by his father at a young age, despite being born and raised in Toronto. Feeling alienated and having grown tired of the indie rock scene, and the excess and overindulgence of post-modernism, he began looking back to simpler times for solace and inspiration, finding it in the timeless music of The Stanley Brothers, Woody Guthrie, The Carter Family, and the Harry Smith Anthology of American Folk Music, along with contemporaries like Old Crow Medicine Show, Jolie Holland, Will Oldham, and The Sadies.

After several years of directing his attention towards visual art, Yorston rekindled his interest in music, and was quickly reminded that it was his first love. He began concentrating on honing his chops and soon started writing songs of his own, and playing in his sister Marileeâs back-up band. A chance meeting in 2006 brought about the formation of the Wayside Ramblers, a short-lived and little-known but influential band that gave Yorston the opportunity to advance his songwriting, and gain experience as a performer. In September 2008, he left the band for all the usual reasons, and went in his own directionâ¦
