A musical journey into a bizarre wonderland of experimental lo-fi self-indulgence.

18 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Noise, ELECTRONIC: Experimental

Details:
In 1997, the New York City based BAD ASS FRANKLIN changed their name to THE STRANGTECULAR BAND. This self-titled disc is the first release on LA BLUE GOON RECORDINGS. Now disbanded, The Strangtecular Band's flamboyant live shows have come to an end. This disc is all that remains.Often likened to Ween, Frank Zappa and/or Captain Beefheart, The Strangtecular Band expanded on the concept behind their earlier recordings to give birth to their first and only full length album. It has been described as "...a musical journey into a bizarre wonderland of experimental lo-fi self-indulgence." There is no in-between response to this album. You either "get it", or you don't. Their creativity had evolved into what is now considered, in the minds of their fans, pure demented genius. Other listeners think in confusion, "I don't understand this." If you appreciate albums like 'Trout Mask Replica' or 'The Pod', you just might "get" what these brilliant madmen have accomplished on this wonderful CD. Also available is THE FUZZ HAUNTED www.cdbaby.com/fuzzhaunted the latest release by Steve Dawson and Randy Lord - co-founders of The Strangtecular Band.

"Backward guitars, vocals laden with weirdly echoing effects and songs titled "Cooking a Moose Over Fire" are the kind of eccentricities you can expect from The Strangtecular Bands' first CD. Those ingredients flavor an aggressive ,Brit-pop & hard rock mélange that is the result of five guys sitting in their rehearsal studio, monkeying with 8-track machines for hours without worry about the cost or self indulgence. It's a brilliant concoction.

"Perhaps the only contemporary band it can really be compared to is Ween, who also breed songs that resemble small animals: fuzzy, cute and sometimes making a mess on the carpet. Like the challenge of caring for a pet, spending time with THE STRANGTECULAR BAND offers great emotional rewards. The only drawback here is that though Strangteculars' home studio captured some brilliant, inspired performances, it also made them sound like they were recorded in a cardboard box"

-Isaac Guzman, "NIGHTBEAT" section of NEWSDAY , 1997

"From the sound of things here these guys must of have had a complete fucking blast in the studio. I love the way the songs (actually, they're more aptly defined as creations) come to life! The album is densely packed with ideas, full of wicked intelligence and biting humor. Unless I miss my guess entirely, there would seem to be more than one Zappa aficionado in residence within this band. This is not an easily definable work by any means, and I like it that way. The only thing I wonder is...how can they manage to perform this in real time?"
