Details:
The summer of 1997 brought a spark of inspiration to the band as Eric and Alex Peterson set out on an adventure to Alaska in their trusty V.W. Westy, "Flo". It was on this trip that the beginnings of Belly Warmer, Egocentric, Telephone Pole, and Risk it were written (you see a lot of telephone poles between Utah and Alaska).

Later that year, another trip was taken to Mexico to challenge the waves of Baja. They came back with bleached hair, bruised bodies, and a new line of inspiration. Hammock Time was written after a battery of salt and sand. In Salt Lake City around the same time, Fishing With a Backhoe was finalized.

All members of BSM enjoy music in all of it's forms. Eric brings the Latin feel to the BSM songs (having lived in Brazil for a few years) with finger-twisting chords and deep Latin rhythms. Alex is a poetic genius and created the likes of: Egocentric, , Hammock Time, The Stars, Washington D.C., and a host of other lines. Phoung Nygun studied music in Vietnam and now has a Master's Degree from B.Y.U. and teaches music. He brings the real talent with articulate jazz licks on the saxophone and clarinet. Spencer Price: talent, talent, talent. James Loomis brings handmade drums, a large pair of lungs (for the didjeridoo), and the hemp. Andy keeps us all on beat with smooth rhythms on the trap set, djembe, and jaw harp. Jeff holds down the high and low ends with the lead guitar and bass lines. All band members enjoy the art work of nature as found in the mountains and desert canyons of Southern Utah, Colorado, and the West. They enjoy backpacking, windsurfing, phishing, snowboarding, and telemark skiing with the philosophy that "life is better when you take a risk". Songs such as Washington D.C., Fishing with a Backhoe, and The Stars reflect political and environmental views of the band.

The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance chose Washington D.C. for their Utah wilderness album. See link below.
