Details:
Since joining Hay Holler Records eight years ago, Big Country Bluegrass has produced eight excellent recordings, and Waiting At The Homeplace continues the trend. The groupâs formula of mixing obscure and classic bluegrass songs with their new material has proven to be a
successful one.
Most often the bandâs new songs come from the writing of Jimmy and Sue Trivette. This recording contains three originals by the Trivettes, and also an outstanding new instrumental by fiddler Billy Hawks. Billyâs wonderful fiddling is all over this recording, and his own âPhase Oneâ is a fitting showcase for his talents. Jimmy and Sue co-authored the strong opening track, âTime To Say Goodbye,â and Jimmyâs âWelcome Homeâ is a fine new gospel gem. Teresaâs version of âKnee Deep In Loving You,â the mountain instrumental âJohn Henry,â and Jimmyâs powerful singing on âStone Wallâ are album standouts as well.
âLarryâs Songâ will quickly become a favorite for many long time Big Country fans. For over fifteen years, until âLou Gehrigâs Diseaseâ took him from the band, Larry Pennington was the groupâs renowned banjo player and vocalist. Larry was sincerely well liked and respected by everyone who knew him, and Sue Trivette has written a very moving tribute. Listen to the bandâs rendition, and then listen as Larry takes the song home with a few measures of his signature rendition of âCumberland Gap.â
When folks talk about traditional bluegrass, the names of Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, the Stanleys, Jim and Jesse, and Jimmy Martin, as well as other first generation pioneers come to mind. Today, though, bands that approach bluegrass as the pioneers of the music did are few and far between. The members of Big Country Bluegrass - Tommy Sells, Teresa Sells, Alan Mastin, Jimmy Trivette, Billy Hawks and Tim Lewis love traditional bluegrass music. Their dedication and talents have caused many fans of the music to smile and nod their heads in appreciation. Waiting At The Homeplace proudly carries the same spirit that was so abundant during the wonderful formative years of bluegrass music.
