Retro-esque rock with a danceable brain

ROCK: Jam-band, POP: with Live-band Production

Details:
"The Synics" are a three-piece garage-rock band whose sound has been described as "retro-esque with a danceable brain" .Their music is a mixture of the pop sophistication of bands like XTC and early Joe Jackson, and the hard-rock rudeness of Soundgarden and Led Zepplin.
Their first CD, entitled "The Synics Are", was recorded over two days at Sound Venture Studios in Ottawa. Most of the final tracks were first takes and there was very little editing or over-dubbing (except harmony vocals, some textural guitar parts and some sparse synth) so the album sounds very much like their live shows.

Almost all of the material was written by David Campbell except for "Brothers" where David Crawford (an old writing partner) wrote the words and "I Want To Come Over" which was co-written by drummer Chris Honegger, David Campbell and yet another writing partner, Tim Joyce.

The band consists of:
Chris Honegger: drums, percussion and shouts ("No Free Ride" and "1234")
Pat Maher: bass and lead vocals ("Things" and "Nobody ")
David Campbell: lead guitar and lead vocals.

For those people who are interested in such things the band used a Neumann U-87 and an AKG C-414 TLII on vocals, an AKG C-414 on guitar, two Beyer MC-740s as drum over-heads and Audio-Technica ATM-35s on the kit. The bass was recorded direct through a Demeter tube DI. Pat uses a '67 Fender Precision, David uses a Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion into a Mesa-Boogie Dual Rectifier and Chris uses his own hand-made custom drum set. The session was engineered and mixed live-off-the-floor by Ryan Souliere into Pro-Tools as SDII files and later transferred to Logic for the minimal editing and over-dubbing done. It was mastered using a Yamaha O2R and a TC-Electronics finalizer. Pat did all the graphics and Punch Audio did the duplication.
