Living Receiver press reviews
=============================
"If anthemic ballads and soaring pop/rock adhere to your taste, then The Sunpilots will appear as something of a revelation to you. With their debut album Living Receiver, the Sydney quartet has delivered a solid pop/rock album fit for stadiums. INDIE ALBUM OF THE WEEK.â THE BRAG
âA beautifully crafted rock album - 4 stars.â REVERB MAGAZINE
âPerhaps it is a given that Living Receiver will be a hit. It deserves to be." THE WEEKLY, AUS
"Poetic rock with the energy of Pearl Jam and the dark undertone of Radiohead..."
SOUNDSCAPE MAGAZINE
âThe Sunpilots could sway stadium crowds if their stagecraft is any match for their strong musical sense of drama and dynamics. There's certainly enough passion in singer Raj Siva-Rajah's delivery, particularly in the psychodrama of Medicated Shell." THE DRUM MEDIA
âPoetic, edgy and unique, the album highlights the band's ability to not only tell a great story, but to play them out like instant classics⦠Great sound, great story tellers and great cover art, what more can a person ask for? My suggestion, get on this bandwagon before it gets crowded.â MEDIASEARCH
âI was hooked from the very first listen. There is something in their music that grabs you and makes you sit up and say, âHey, these guys have a message and they sure know how to put it forwardâ. If you enjoy melodic emotional rock then do yourself a favour and check these guys out.â THE NAKED DWARF
The Sunpilots - Biography
=========================
Born to a classically trained Sri Lankan mother, Raj Siva-Rajah was a boy caught between two worlds. From the age of 8 he began mastering the classical Carnatic music of the east, while also falling in love with the gritty angst that was the grunge era.
A chance meeting with guitarist Bob Spencer in 2006 led to the birth of The Sunpilots, who slipped into public consciousness that year with the release of their first 4-track EP. Despite being little more than a demo, the EP found its way onto the airwaves through Australian radio stations such as Nova and Triple j. A few months later, The Sunpilots were awarded a Musicoz Producers Award.
A mini online revolution followed, leading to one of the largest MySpace fan bases (50,000+) in the country and the bandâs first iTunes âSingle of the Weekâ. The band quickly become the most subscribed to Australian band on You Tube and one of the top 100 most subscribed to bands on You Tube in the world.
When The Sunpilots finally released their debut studio single âSpotlight in the Sunâ in May 2007, it took the music industry by storm. âSpotlight in the Sunâ quickly became the #1 most added song on Australian radio (including the #1 most added song in the Contemporary Rock and Dance/Pop genres). The âSpotlight in the Sunâ music video was the most watched Australian music video on You Tube, receiving almost 70,000 views in the first 3 months. The explosion was mirrored on MySpace when the track entered the top 10 most played songs (independent) in the country and the music video was viewed 80,000 times. The clip aired multiple times on MTV, Video Hits and Channel V. âSpotlight in the Sunâ is still being added to radio playlists across the country â it recently entered the top 100 most played songs in Australia.
The Sunpilots released Living Receiver independently in August 2008 to rave reviews (including an âIndie Album of the Yearâ and two âIndie Album of the Weekâ awards from Aussie street press). The album was co-produced by Aussie producer Phil McKellar (Silverchair, Grinspoon, Kisschasy) and mastered in New York by Ted Jensen (Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance). A year in the making, Living Receiver is quickly becoming a must-have indie rock album. The Living Receiver Australian tour spanned 30 cities in 7 states and saw the bandâs live shows described as âelectricâ and âstadium-worthyâ by reviewers.
The Sunpilots have also begun to turn heads overseas: winning Best International Artist at the Canadian Independent Music Awards and a Single of the Year at the LA Music Awards. The band was one of 15 rock finalists in the International Songwriting Competition (nominated alongside fellow Aussie rockers Eskimo Joe). Judged by the likes of Tom Waits, Julian Casablancas (The Strokes), Robert Smith (The Cure), Frank Black (The Pixies) and Joe Satriani, the ISC is the largest and most highly regarded songwriting competition in the world. A new track from Living Receiver entitled âMetric Systemâ was chosen by the judges as being one of the best of 20,000 entries from around the globe.
With the next single about to be released and national and international tour plans, The Sunpilots are poised to the scene alight. As Mediasearch said in a recent review â âget on this bandwagon before it gets crowdedâ.
