Details:
Heâs referred to as âEducated Thug,â but before we pass judgment on this 9th grade educator/entertainer, you must understand who the man is behind the âEducated Thug.â Troy DeGar (T-roy) grew up in Houston Texas. He was raised in Houstonâs South Park and Southwest neighborhoods which became known nationally via the popularity of hip hop music, which depicted these areas as being notorious to the widespread use and sales of drugs. T-roy recalls always being aware of the drug activity and doing all that he could to try and stay away from it. Sports and Entertainment was what he did to occupy his time. He remembers, that many of his friends used and sold drugs. It was common in that environment. As a youth, T-roy had three dreams growing up: to play professional football, be an actor, and be involved with music. T-royâs latest and biggest project to date is the release of his debut album, I Got Options. The album has a resounding theme of staying away from drugs and rather than glamorizing street life, it gives the consequences of these acts. His aim was to do the same thing that he does with filming, illustrate with words. This is not a typical hip hop album. T-roy has infused a host of musical sounds, compositions, and genres all on one project. While the majority of his album is melodic and easy on the ears; there are a couple of songs that were produced specifically with dancing in mind. The song that really pushed him the most creatively was, The Last Champion. Since he grew up listening to all types of music, he knew if he could pull that one off, that people would see his range as a songwriter and producer. And pull it off, he did! The Last Champion is a rock song that screams for National Placement. It chronicles a person that is fed up with the 9-5 work schedule and decides to follow a dream. Backed by their talent, drive, and belief in the USA (Land of Opportunity), the character in the song eventually realizes the dream therefore making them, The Last Champion. T-roy wrote a theme song for the Dallas Cowboys, a theme song for the Dallas Mavericks and an affirming song for youngsters called, Believe It Achieve It, featuring a child star, Rachel Dupard of âAmericaâs Got Talent.â All and all, I Got Options is a musical education in decision making, it is a garden of good music and excellent production, and the birth of one the Southâs new lyricists, T-roy DeGar, âThe Educated Thug!â T-roy wants to use his fame and influence to give back in the community. Much like the structure that gave him an escape from the streets, he wanted to create the same opportunities for children who may not have been afforded the same possibilities. He envisioned the creation of a college scholarship fund, and building a community center to provide young people with options to the street life.
