Details:
This music was made in a row home in South Philly around the year 2000, before "BlueSinatra," was a twinkle in your girlfriend's eye, and long after "Fist to the Dome," left you and your newborn baby in another city.
"Life in Pastel" was a recording project I took on while searching for band members in my move from South Jersey to the city of Brotherly Love. What I soon found out was that brotherly love did not exist. Instead, I found myself stuck in between a vortex of the Philly indie rock scene at the Khyber, Upstage and Nicks, w/the "Delta 72," "Three 4 Tens," & "the Strokes," etc. and the new neo-soul movement at the Five Spot's "Black Lily," & Willamina's. It was an exciting time to be in Philadelphia, however, it was a bad time not to have a band and just drum machines, keyboards, and anything else I could grab...but I pressed on.
These recordings were made with the lowest fidelity, no pop stoppers, no real vocal mics, no auto tune (that's for sure), and just a lot of honesty. Not on purpose, but I was living on a $7/hr salary and couldn't afford the good stuff, not to mention dinner sometimes. I almost had a few labels take me on back then; Bar None, Nettwerk, & Kindercore Recs got me to round 2 of listening sessions, but nothing surfaced. I honestly think these songs would be more popular now, after many other synth-infused bands made it to the mainstream. The Roland Juno 106 I used to record many of these songs, is now worth 4 times what I paid for it back then. I can't believe how much time has passed.
I soon found some like minded band members to form a struggling musical experience with an undefined sound, that to this day has finally found its niche in the dance/rock scene called, "Blue Sinatra." Feel free to download a part of history. An album of 15+ songs will be available on iTunes by February of 2009, Enjoy.
