Details:
L DeBois grew up in a small neighborhood outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania called Bloomsdale. His earliest musical influences were Michael Jackson and Marvin Gaye, which led L to the sounds of Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, and Prince. As a young teenager L began to play his first instrument, the piano, followed soon after by guitar, and then bass guitar, drums, harmonica, percussion, and more. Each instrument gave L new insights into the realm of music-making and led him to new musical inspirations such as Jimmy Hendrix, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Miles Davis, Bootsy Collins, Louis Armstrong, and the Isley Brothers just to name a few.
Practicing his instruments for hours at a time, training his voice and ear for that perfect sound and extensively researching the roots of the music he loved; L began performing almost immediately at a number of well-known Philly nightspots. Through his Philly performances L was blessed with the opportunity to sing and play guitar at the famous Record Plant Studios in Los Angeles for A'n'R representatives at Def Jam. After impressing Island/Def Jam Music Group A'n'R Tina Davis, as well as the vice president and president at the time, Kevin Liles and Lyor Cohen, L had landed his first major record deal. Working on his first album for Def Soul, L recorded with producers including Raphael Saadiq, Mike City, Chucky Thompson, and No I.D. However, in the aftermath of staff cutbacks, the label's large artist roster presaged a very lengthy wait for an album release. Therefore, L and Def Soul amicably parted ways.
As an independent artist currently living in Los Angeles, California L continues to expand and attract new followers with his opening performances for talents such as Goapele at the Roxy, and Kindred and the Family Soul at the House of Blues in Hollywood. Through his many solo performances at the well known 3rd Street Promenade and the Temple Bar in Santa Monica L's undeniable artistry in music has created a following that is reaching all over the world. His versatility as an artist has connected him with a BMG publishing deal, and more recently a production deal with 3rd Street Music Group as well as a contract with Val's Artist Management for commercial jingles.
L is a dynamic artist who goes about his craft with a diligent, focused, and wildly creative approach. He completely immerses himself in the creation of each of his songs. When you play a song by L DeBois from beginning to end (except where otherwise noted) he wrote it, created the music, programmed and/or played every instrument, performed every vocal and engineered the sound. Seamlessly blending R'n'B with elements of hip-hop, rock and funk, L's musical direction is truly inspiring and fresh. There is no question that this multi-talented artist will continue to create the music that boundlessly touches the souls of all who hear him.
