Details:
The Thins
Celebrating the release of their debut CD, "Postcard Angels," The Thins are a high-energy, drum-and-bass acoustic power trio featuring AJ Strauss (The Sutras, Jennie Stearns Band) on upright bass, Brian Dudla (Mary Lorson and St. Low, Plastic Nebraska) on drums and Gabriel Tavares (Jennie Stearns Band, Plastic Nebraska) on acoustic guitar. Full-throated vocal harmonies, punchy rhythms and innovative songwriting tinged with shades of the east make this one of the most unique and exciting bands to emerge in 2004.
Using the material on Tavares' solo effort, "Cipher" as a foundation, The Thins quickly defined an entirely new creative vision featuring vocal-scat upright bass solos, full-throated vocal harmonies, and unconventional rhythms. The core of The Thins' sound is acoustic, but they push hard, layer loops and often launch into blistering drum-and-bass madhouse experiments. Expect the unexpected at their live shows, as each night is a walk through a free-associative funhouse hall of mirrors.
What Critics have to say about "Postcard Angels":
Ithaca Journal's Best acoustic CD of 2004: The Thins, "Postcard Angels." ""The power trio of AJ Strauss, Gabe Tavares and Brian Dudla whipped up a huge sound despite its minimalist setup, incorporating tribal rhythms and pointed lyrics into catchy songs. . . Put together three of Ithaca's most talented musicians, and you're bound to come up with something special. That's certainly the case with the Thins. . ."
--Jim Catalono, Ithaca Journal
...and about "Cipher"
"The music on this disc is a testament to the creative potential of an individual brave enough to explore his inner muse without shying away from any aspect of it. No, there is nothing shy about this disc at all. The urgent lyrics evoke images of the natural world using poetry that is like a modern form of haiku. Brilliant Tabla playing by Steven Curtis and traditional south Indian vocals by Sri Priya Sundararajan on several tracks fit perfectly into Gabe's harmonic sphere. Sim Redmond and Uniit Carruyo also lend their talents to this project to brilliant effect. All this is rounded out by a few tracks with thundering drum and bass work by the team of Matt Saccuccimorano and Brian Dozoretz. Then there is the guitar work, which of course is not very much like anything you've heard before. Gabe's single acoustic guitar has the power of Jimmy Page's famous (and usually electric) "guitar army" sound. There is a drone and there is a melody- sometimes stabbing into the sky and others strolling through the hills and valleys of a few of the more gentle numbers. Given it's timelessness and intensity I think this music might stay with us for a long time to come..."
