"Scientists don't have the instruments to measure the human soul, but musicians do." - Anonymous
KC Jiang has been wandering the two worlds of engineering and music performing for many years.
KC (short for Kou-Chen) was born in Taiwan, his parents moved from China to Taiwan during the Communist Revolution. When he was a child, he wished he could play a musical instrument and become a street music performer. However, his country had only just begun to emerge from the destruction of war and it was very difficult for most families to afford a piano, violin or even a guitar. One day his older brother found a tremolo harmonica in a wooden box. Their mother had brought that wooden box from Shanghai, China to Taiwan.
The harmonica was made in Shanghai and the brand name was "Truth, Kindness and Beauty". His brother played with the harmonica but quickly lost interest. KC was very happy when his brother gave the harmonica to him. He taught himself to play and off and on for many years, he played that same harmonica. After he graduated from college in Taiwan, he left for the U.S. to attend graduate school, leaving his harmonica behind, never to see it again.
He traveled around the U.S. and went to schools in Tennessee and Virginia. He finally settled in the San Francisco Bay Area. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering Department from Stanford University and has worked in the engineering field now for many years.
A couple of years ago, his childhood dream came true. He now plays music at San Francisco tourist locations, such as The Cannery, bars in Berkeley, such as Jupiter and Farmer's Market in San Jose, etc. He also plays music at festivals, nursing homes, senior citizen centers and churches. KC is one of the musicians at San Francisco Movement for Health and Healing
(www.sfmovement.com).
KC plays classical music, oriental (Chinese) melodies, Celtic (Irish, Scottish and others) songs, American folk songs and his original melodies on harmonica. He also taught himself to play those melodies on the Irish whistle after he listened to the haunting Irish whistle melodies from Titanic. KC feels he is very lucky that he has been able to relay those passionate, inspirational and delightful melodies with his two special instruments to his audience. Singer and songwriter Mia Mustari once told him "You are such a unique talent. Your music brought tears to my eyes."
