Details:
This 3 woman, 1 man band sounds like old Heart meets Shawn Colvin, with a touch of Bonnie Rait. Mary's powerful vocals are showcased in this album, and for good reason. She has an uncanny clarity, with a huge range - sometimes deeply intimate and smoky and sometimes hard driving and edgy. Mary also does the bulk of the writing and plays a jumbo 12 string, a hollow body electric, and a mandolin. These provide a rich complement to her riveting vocals. This album really does it all. From the pop feel of the first cut "Falling in Love" to the almost Celtic feel of "Flying in my Dreams" (which has a nice mandolin between the 12 string and electric guitars) and "Tradition" which has a huge but tight array of vocal harmonies that you can feel in your chest. Mary's vocals in "Blue" and "This is As" are both sensitive and highly emotional. The other Tomboy members provide a rich musical and vocal complement. Katherine, with her punchy, creative bass line pays the perfect bottom to this varied mix of original tunes. She also adds a rock and roll tune, with lead vocals on "I told a lie" to add some variety and humor to the mix. Lisa on lead, slide, and rhythm guitars proves without question that girls do indeed play guitars. Finally Gary, from the UK, plays a great percussion/Kit that really gives the sound a tight finished groove from tune to tune. Everyone in "Tomboy" sings backup at one point or another, which gives the band a full textured sound, without being overdone. This is a production that you really have to hear, and the more you listen the more you'll like it!
