Details:
Toucan Eddy had its unlikely but "fateful" beginning when two singer/songwriters met in Arizona in July 1974. Bert Campbell, from Atlanta, had just graduated from NAU in Flagstaff. Thomas Waterfield, the son of movie actress Jane Russell and LA Rams quarterback Bob Waterfield, decided to leave the "Hollywood scene" and move to the peace and quiet of the Arizona high desert. The two met one afternoon on the Campbell ranch "fixing fence" and found they had a common shared interest in music. They got together and jammed for a few months before forming a band playing cover tunes and originals.
Bert grew up listening to all the "soul groups" of the 60's and later influences included the Young Rascals, Santana, the Allman Brothers and the Beatles. Tom, a west coast boy, got most of his influences from groups like Crosby, Stills and Nash, Neil Young, the Stones, the Beach Boys and also the Beatles.
Having very different vocal styles, Bert and Tom strangely discovered they had an almost "brother harmony" sound when they sang together. This blend has been a trademark of their music ever since.
The CD "Mango Pie" took 4 years to record and displays an interesting mix of funky rhythms, love ballads and a touch of smooth jazz without sounding like "elavator music". Some have also likened it to the playfulness of Jimmy Buffet on the cut "I Like Spicy Women". The song "She's Never Been To Colorado" is in the country-rock vein just to throw you a curve ball. Why, because the group doesn't want to sound predictable and likes to show the different songwritng styles they are capable of performing.
Several of the cuts are very danceable and Toucan Eddy has been playing these tunes in clubs for years.
All of the musicians on the CD are veteran players and bring their own unique styles to the mix. Noted is drummer Stan Mickelson. An avid fan of Tower of Power, his "funkiness" gives several of the songs that inherent groove. Topped with searing guitar solos, sax riffs and "big harmonies", the Toucan Eddy sound is exciting as well as smooth without sounding too polished or "packaged".
You could say it is a little "old school" sounding with a fresh approach. Many of the songs were recorded 20+ years ago but are still timeless in appeal. The newer material fits in nicely with the older songs and it hard to tell what was written when. The band thinks that's a cool thing.
But don't take their word for it. You have to experience the music for yourself and make your own determination.
If you haven't had enough of the "BS" by now, you can wander over to their website www.toucaneddy.com and have a "gander". There's more info and some photos of these "donuts" if you are interested. You can also email to them at toucaneddy@hotmail.com.
