Hello! Thanks for stopping at this site to meet singer Georgene Fountain! She said sheâll be back in a minute. You know her last name is pronounced âFontaineâ- for real, no kidding! Sheâs a go-getter, that Georgene â high energy kind of person. Sheâs sung jazz internationally in Japan in a documentary about Billie Holiday. She also won first place in the Billie Holiday Vocal Competition in Baltimore. You know, she sings classical music too. She sang on the national TV show the âWest Wingâ. Yeah, I loved it too! It was the âBells, bellsâ episode with Yo Yo Ma. One of the characters ( I forgot the guyâs name) comes to grips with having TSD- traumatic stress disorder that he got when somebody tried to shoot his boss at the White House. Anyway, he goes off his rocker whenever he hears bells ringing. Georgene got a great close up while singing âCarol of the Bellsâ actually in front of the White House! She loved it! Sheâs has a hard time answering the âwhere are you fromâ question because she was raised in a military family (you military folks understand). She grew up all over- New Jersey, Virginia, France, Germany, New York and in Maryland. All of that travel to so many places has been great for her. She says it has made her appreciate other cultures and it makes it easy to get along with people. Sheâs had great role models in life. Both of her parents graduated from Tuskegee University where they sang in the choir. When she was kid her parents had everyone sing while riding in the car instead of turning on the radio. They sang spirituals, blues and jazz! She sang her first solo when she was just 5 years old - cute, huh? Her next solo came when she was nine years old. She sang a Christmas carol sung in French and on the radio! Very exciting! Although they moved a lot, she always joined the choir where ever she went. Besides her immediate family, music has been her BFF (you know, best friend forever).
She heard so much about Tuskegee that she decided to go there too! Yep, you guessed right, she joined the choir. She finished undergrad and graduate degrees there. She wasnât happy until she decided to follow her heart. She went to the Indiana University
School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana. Do you know about that place? Itâs the biggest, and many say itâs the best music school in the country. There are about 2,000 students in the music school alone! Looking back, she says it was hard to get in and hard to get out! But she survived music theory and finished in vocal performance. She sings classical music too. In the classical world she is a coloratura soprano. They sing very high and fast like the Queen of the Night character in Mozartâs opera The Magic Flute. One of her friends said the notes are so high only dogs can hear it! She had to get a day job along the way. Thatâs where she met the blues harmonica player you hear on her CD with her 14 originals. She said his whole family plays the blues- wife, daughters, dog, cat, everybody! He encouraged her to try the blues and loved it! What? Youâre looking for that CD? Itâs on this site! Itâs relaxing sometimes and fun sometimes. You can but it today- youâll like it. Now as for the âHappy Jazzy Birthdayâ song, WPFW 89.3 FM radio kept playing the song every week on the Andrea Bray show. She decided to give the tune a makeover because Andrea said her listeners love the song! Well, they should! The rhythm section is one of the best in the business! Grammy award winner Larry Willis is on piano; Michael Bowie, bass player formerly with the Manhattan Transfer vocal jazz group opens up with an amazing solo; thereâs J.C. Jefferson Jr. who really is something else on drums; and then two enthusiastic back-up singers keep things swinging! Georgene had the song beautifully designed as a GREETING CARD. The lyrics are printed inside and the song is on a CD single inside. Isnât she clever! Itâs a great gift for friends, loved ones, co-workers, anybody! I bought several of them! Itâs a good tune!
