ROCK: Modern Rock, ROCK: Emo

Details:
Easily the least publicized disc ever stolen from my house (twice!), this debut album from Portland's Tripleswift has already won a certain following among my thieving acquaintances. You can understand the temptations-the amateur criminal would assume this high gloss rock candy would leap the charts and guarantee a hefty resale; the career aesthete would insist such boundless drive and passion should belong to the world.

From the distinct, chaotic pop thunderclap openings to the immeasurably appealing whine of guitars-an effect not unlike the dentist's drill after a session of unfettered nitrous ingestion-producer Jeff Saltzman unfurls a new rock of structured abandon sublimated toward a churning, elegant pop framework-orgasm recalled in tranquility. Paul Bond's vocals balance an arena rock affectation with a self-conscious and enormously appealing vulnerability, throwing words together at such a pace-tripleswift, indeed-that the frenetic rhythms are inevitably, charmingly addled by his own heights of hormonal delirium. Not new rock, maybe, nor hard or soft or classic, but good rock played well and without pretension..........Jay Horton
