One of the most popular is White Rose, the true story of Flora McDonald who was instrumental in the rescue of the Bonnie Prince Charlie, the rightful heir to the throne of Scotland. One of the most striking features of the tune is the contrast between the colorful heroics of Flora and the sweet and lilting quality of the music.
The lessons continue with the Seven Men of Glenmoriston, an anthematic salute to a ragged but loyal band of rebel followers who protected the prince in the aftermath of the disastrous defeat at the hands of the British at Culloden Moor, which ended Prince Charles bid to regain his family's rightful claim to the Scottish crown.
Ross takes his Scottish influence seriously. Born to famous fine-arts painter and illustrator, Alexander Ross, a native Scot born in Dunfermline, Alan keenly feels the depths of his roots. My Father's Eye reflects that feeling of connection with his Ross lineage. Ross studies Scottish history passionately, consults regularly with a cadre of Scots, and keeps his interest fresh by writing new music. But in typical Scots fashion, Ross takes it one step further.
His campaign, THINK PLAID, is a teaching outreach to bolster the exchange of cultural knowledge in school age children. Dressed in his kilt, Ross performs for the children and their parents in a special program about Scottish history that encompasses his music. This service is provided free to schools. Ross holds costs to a minimum by approaching suppliers in the towns where he performs about printing the materials as a donation to the schools. Materials are left with the schools as teaching aides. Teachers are encouraged to use the materials to explore more about Scotland in the classroom.
