When Beethoven died early in 1827 it is said that 10,000 people attended his funeral. Famed for the brilliance of his piano and symphonic works, he also played the violin and viola and wrote 10 sonatas for violin and piano. Of these, the F major (Op. 24) 'Spring' and the A Major (Op.47) 'Kreutzer' are the most celebrated.

On The Kreutzer Sonata and other works Leonard and Tinney perform these sonatas with a mix of skill and feeling which comes from lives utterly devoted to music making. The 'Spring' sonata, so called because of the way the music gently unfolds at the beginning, is a testament to the composer's own love of nature. The 'Kreutzer' sonata has long been seen as one of the great challenges in chamber music repertoire; a challenge that Catherine Leonard and Hugh Tinney meet with ease as a seamless and intimate duo. Two shorter works, a Beethoven Rondo and Kreisler Rondino complete the CD .

Catherine Leonard
Catherine Leonard, who has been quoted as "Ireland's leading violinist" by the Irish Times and "a conspicuously gifted player" by the Santa Barbara News Press, has captured the attention of audiences and critics across the world for the musical integrity and interpretive insight she brings to standard repertoire and newly composed works alike.

At home Catherine has performed as soloist with all of the major Irish orchestras and is featured regularly as a recitalist and chamber musician in concert series and music festivals around the island.

An advocate of contemporary Irish composers, Catherine is a particular champion of Belfast-born Ian Wilson. In 2007 she premiered his Concerto for Violin and Chamber Ensemble. This was commissioned by Camerata Pacifica of which she is the Principal Violinist. Based in California, the group performs repertoire spanning the body of chamber music from sonatas to larger chamber works.

Elsewhere she has appeared at the Flanders Festival, the Perth International Festival, the City of London Chamber Music Festival, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, with the Busan Philharmonic in South Korea and at the Wigmore Hall in London. Catherine Leonard's performances have been featured on BBC Radio 3, National Public Radio and KUSC in the United States and in Ireland on RTÉ lyric fm, RTÉ Radio 1 and on television, which featured a profile of Catherine with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra.

Hugh Tinney
Since winning first prize at both the 1983 Pozzoli and 1984 Paloma O'Shea piano competitions, Hugh Tinney has performed in more than 30 countries throughout Europe, the USA, South America and the Far East. Festival engagements have taken him across the globe and he has broadcast in more than 15 countries.
A prize in the 1987 Leeds Piano Competition earned him a busy career in the UK, performing with orchestras such as the London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, Royal Scottish, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and London Mozart Players. Highlights in Ireland include Chopin and Schubert recital series at IMMA in Dublin, the complete Mozart and Beethoven Piano Concertos at the National Concert Hall, the Beethoven sonata cycle jointly with Philippe Cassard and Joanna MacGregor at Bantry House and regular solo appearances with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and Ulster Orchestra. Chamber music partners have included the Borodin, Tokyo, RTÉ Vanbrugh and Vogler Quartets, Ensemble Wien, Steven Isserlis, Richard Watkins, Bernadette Greevy and Catherine Leonard. He has previously recorded solo, chamber and concerto repertoire for Decca, Meridian, Naxos, Marco Polo, Black Box and Riverrun.
From 2000 to 2006 Hugh Tinney was Artistic Director of the Music Festival in Great Irish Houses. He teaches at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and has been a jury member at several international piano competitions. He was awarded a two-year bursary by the Arts Council of Ireland to research, perform and record Irish and international contemporary piano music during 2006 and 2007.
